Not just that. You sell of your high picks for a fortune then get 20% off the cost of your NGA draftee, compounding the profit.
I'm in the minority not having a problem with the academies. It's just the payment system that stinks.

Its the double dipping that really kills the system.

Examples, : Gold Coast got Walter , valued at pick 3 , for 26+, but they also have an end of first round pick this year.
( Should have been forced to use their pick 4 ).
They also got Read , valued at pick 9 using points from 2nd round and later picks.
( should have been forced to use their future first round pick ).
They got Jack Rogers , valued at pick 14, should have been forced to use their second round pick.
Will Graham , valued at pick 26, should have been forced to use their 2024 second round pick.

If they'd been forced to use those picks, they'd still have gotten their academy players with very good value.
BUT: now they have around 4 picks in the first 20, and a full hand of second round picks in 2024 as well.

They made a couple of trades, but i don't think any of them netted them more than a second round pick.

My biggest issue there are guys who would otherwise be playing afl at a high level who get basically gifted to the clubs that other clubs who other teams could not have gotten.

JUH Sanders, Campbell mills heeny Blakey Greene hopper Hipwood. Also the zones are wack.
I'm 100% behind concessions to help the northern and franchise teams as it's a generational investment and they're not the reason we're perpetuity shnit.
The big increase in northern NGA players is the rewards for the last 10 years the AFL have put in to junior footy in those areas and to expect them to pull the pin on it now is just wishful thinking.
The SC will rebalance it somewhat as those players start getting big contracts but GC and GWS can't really attract stars so they must draft them.
So in principle l think the system works as intended, but the addition of NGA's for everyone else damaged the model and a few like JUH snuck through. If clubs just had to pay a fair price it would fix most of the problems. FA is also another disaster that's damaging the landscape. Again it's not the concept at fault, but the implementation.

Yep and because of the ability to shift there first and match with master picks they have three first rounders this year and still a top 12 academy guy

A quarter of the 2024 AFL season is done and St Kilda sit in 13th position with a record of 2-4 after 6 rounds... how are we feeling and what do we take from it?

Yep the AFL talk about trying to even the competition, but all they have done is create a Northern States monopoly. Having said that the Bulldogs, Collingwood and others have done well out their academies and father sons.

The comment from Lloyd was kind of terrible as well and normally I believe him to have a pretty good football brain. Rattles off 4 of our best 22 injuries from the 8 genuine ones we have then goes on about lack of talent.

Like jesus no s**t, most clubs get tested at that level of injury.

Agree, way to a kick a club when they’re down, and sink the teeth in, but that’s Kane and Caro for ya’ (they have their favourites vs easy targets)

I posted in the trade thread re: Caro Wilson's there above's thickness ... may as well repost here

Caroline Wilson saying the Northern Clubs only get these great Academy picks once every few years ...... fk off you dumb cow

And its Dalrymple ...... not Davenport ..... you stupid cluck

Fk me that show operates on half a brain cell

Seriously just shake your head at how seasoned Football Media Specialists could get it sooooo wrong on soooo many accounts ...... and the others just sit there and nod in agreeance like robots with batteries up their arses .... *ing embarrassing nescience

I'd have to watch it again to be sure, but my recollection was that she was implying that St Kilda get a great NG academy pick every few years, which is probably fair.

But if she was indeed referring to the Northern academy conveyor belt of elite players, then i agree with everything you posted.

We have never had a good NGA pick. Mitch Owens was pick 33 and every club had the chance to take him and passed

These are always terrific nights.

Couldn't get to the last one but a mate told me it was absolutely packed.

I went to one just before that pesky Covid struck.....they were showing the 1997 Prelim against the Roos.

Jason Heatley was one of the guest speakers.....the "ol heater" was a great speaker.

And wasn't he fun to watch during that incredible 1997 season.

Just to my left to my surprise was Ricky Nixon.

Incredibly and you won't believe this....he has his pants on.. !!!!!

Yowza !!!!!

You'd make a good chief of detectives StFly.

He was to my left and a row or 2 behind me.

My talents don't extend to "Linda Blair" type head actions....so I honestly can't answer yr question.
