JAMES MICHAEL COMPLETES FAIRYTALE

SOME players wait a fair time to collect their first ATP Tour title, and very few win an ATP 500 competition for many years. But for Australian wildcard James Michael, he won the five matches required to earn 500 points and shoot up to a remarkable 118th in the world.

In the final he downed top 30 player, Croatian Ivo Karlovic in straight sets. James Michael won 6-2 6-3 in a rout to claim the title and the 500 ranking points having also defeated Spainard Tommy Robredo and Australian Peter Williams earlier in the tournament.

FINAL:

[4] Ivo Karlovic (CRO) defeated by James Michael (AUS) (WC) 6-2 6-3

Just three more tournaments until Wimbledon with the Aegon Championships, Nottingham Aegon Championships and an English Challenger event in the lead-up to the grand slam. In the Aegon Championships we have a strong 32-man field led by Novak Djokovic as the number one seed. Australian James Michael has earned a wildcard into the event and is undefeated at this stage, but a real step up in class for this event compared to the last. His first round opponent, Fabio Fognini is ranked 22 in the world and a potential third round match against Andy Murray awaits, if he makes it there.

ROUND 1:

Blaz Kavcic (SLO) vs. Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC)
[6] Fabio Fognini (ITA) vs. James Michael (AUS) (WC)

The fairytale is over for James Michael, going down in a tight three-set loss to Fabio Fognini. It was hardly a shock, but after being on such a high he comes back to reality. He will look to bounce back next week at the lower tournament.

ROUND 1:

Blaz Kavcic (SLO) defeated by Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC) 4-6 6-4 6-3
[6] Fabio Fognini (ITA) defeated James Michael (AUS) (WC) 6-2 2-6 7-5

ROUND 2:

Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC) vs. [5] Kevin Anderson (RSA)

AEGON-Championships.jpg

Not a great tournament for the regens as Baramono is bundled out by Kevin Anderson. Can't be too upset, they're playing top 25 players here.

ROUND 2:

Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC) defeated by [5] Kevin Anderson (RSA) 6-3 7-6 (4)

Final: [3] Ernests Gulbis (LAT) defeated [7] David Goffin (BEL) 4-6 6-2 6-2

Another bloody tough draw for James Michael, he can't seem to cut a break, facing third seed and world number 20 Gael Monfils in the first round. Jose Rodriguez has an equally tough encounter up against number two seed Feliciano Lopez. Pretty frustrating as points here could help them gain automatic entry into Wimbledon. They need it especially Rodriguez. Michael will likely gain a wildcard.

ROUND 1:

Farrukh Dustov (UZB) vs. Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC)
James Michael (AUS)
vs. [3] Gael Monfils (FRA)
Jose Rodriguez (ESP) vs. [2] Feliciano Lopez (ESP)

imageresizer

The draw was cruel on the pair and to qualify certainly for Wimbledon they'll need to enter in the Challenger and go far for a points boost. Frustrating because after Monfils as the third seed, the next highest was Adrian Mannarino down at number 48. They drew two of the three top 47 players in the tournament. Baromono the last hope in this draw.

ROUND 1:

Farrukh Dustov (UZB) defeated by Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC) 6-2 6-2
James Michael (AUS) defeated by [3] Gael Monfils (FRA) 6-3 6-4
Jose Rodriguez (ESP) defeated by [2] Feliciano Lopez (ESP) 7-6 (5) 6-1

ROUND 2:

Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC) vs. [16] Carlos Berlocq (ARG)

imageresizer

Huge win for Baromono here as an upset saw Jarrko Nieminine upset Gael Monfils so he will play the world number 72 in the quarter final instead of world number 20.

ROUND 3:

[6] Gilles Muller (LUX) defeated by Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC) 5-7 6-1 6-1

QUARTER FINAL:

Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC) vs. [13] Jarkko Nieminen (FIN)

Well he made it into the semi at least, but now coming up against Novak, I don't expect young Sam will be too competitive or cause too much trouble.

QUARTER FINAL:

Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC) defeated [13] Jarkko Nieminen (FIN) 6-0 1-6 6-4

SEMI FINALS:

[1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC)
[7] Nick Kyrgios (AUS) vs. [2] Feliciano Lopez (ESP)

It was a spirited effort, but all for nought as the Joker goes through and wins the last important tournament before Wimbledon.

SEMI FINALS:

[1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) defeated Sam Baromono (BEL) (WC) 6-3 7-6 (5)
[7] Nick Kyrgios (AUS) defeated by [2] Feliciano Lopez (ESP) 4-6 6-3 7-5

Final: [1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) defeated [2] Feliciano Lopez (ESP) 6-3 6-4

JAMES MICHAEL BOOKS WIMBLEDON PLACE AT REGEN TEAMMATE'S EXPENSE

AUSTRALIAN up and coming star James Michael has secured a Wimbledon main draw place after winning the English Challenger event in the lead-up to the grand slam. He was seeded number one for the tournament and gained enough points to rise from 118 to 89 in the world. Unfortunately for fellow regen Jose Rodriguez, it meant the Spainard missed out with Michael defeating him in the semi-final. This means Rodriguez will need to rely on being handed a wildcard or earn it through qualifying if he is to secure a place at Wimbledon.

Welcome everyone to the grandest of grand slams here in London with the start of Wimbledon. The local hopes were dealt a cruel blow prior to the draw being released with the announcement that number 10 seed and English young gun Dom Sharples has had to withdraw due to a back complaint. They say the injury is not long-term but it was enough to keep him out of the tournament.
