Chesting and Pushing during play breaks - What do you think?

How else are faux tough guys like Hodge and Lewis (that would probably run like screaming girls at first hint at a real fight away from a footy field) supposed to strut their stuff?

Is that the guy who played a grand final with a broken rib and still won a Norm Smith?

I recall Geelong players repeatedly pushing and niggling away at his ribs and he invited them to do their worst.

I cannot stand it when a player gives away a free and stands over the ball to make getting the ball difficult for the player receiving the ball. They then proceed to pretty much ride on the back of the player.

Infuriating.

I don't like it when a player has the ball and is running, and whoever is chasing them for whatever reason (usually because they can't actually grab them to tackle) pushes them in the back as they kick. Not a good look and far worse than a little "niggle" in between contests (however stupid it might look)

I think it is garbage and makes the game look like a provincial joke.

1 - tell the players to stop it before the start of '16 season
2 - pay a free if it happens
3 - will be consigned to history within the course of one season
cool, it will be even better when the bump and tackle are outlawed.

FFS leave the game alone!

Talked about sucked in by the media you flog. Hawthorn hardly do it at all between breaks. Did hawthorn do it on Friday NO Richmond did FFS. Did Mitchell do it when he did his Jab jab, NO, he did it after he was elbowed in the back from an Essendon player.

I have a special irritation for players who go around pushing, bumping, and chesting other players when those players are just standing around doing nothing. The commentators refer to it as "intimidation". Having had it done to me before in games, I didn't find it intimidating - I found it childish and annoying, and made me much more likely to bury that player in a tackle the first opportunity I got. Watching it on our TV screens each week makes me embarrassed for our code. I imagine NRL supporters watching it (being a Sydneysider myself) and cringe at how faux-tough it is.

Hawthorn do it a lot. And I noticed on the weekend Richmond doing it back to Hawthorn with enthusiasm. Trent Cotchin in particular seems to have discovered a passion for pretty-boy chest puffing. I did enjoy Sam Mitchell's sarcastic amusement about it, but I feel that Sam could guffaw at his own team-mates just as much.

I love watching genuinely tough players do their thing. And to be honest, a lot of the chest puffers are actually legitimately tough players (Hawthorn, Cotchin and Miles are obvious examples). But I just wish they would do the tough stuff without the posing. I don't know what they think it achieves. Are players really so childish and stupid that that kind of lame argy-bargy actually affects their mindset? Give me someone like Jack Viney any day - who doesn't mess around, he just seriously brings the hurt to his opposition in tackles.

Anyway, that's my view. What do you guys think?

Says it doesn't bother you, but then talks about how you focus to trying to get a really good tackle on the guy...mission accomplished. Chance to tackle happens you go in a bit vigorous...do something stupid give away a kick. In doing so you have told the player that his niggle is working and he steps it up a notch. Haven't you seen Ballantyne play? Its all about trying to get you focused on 1 upmanship instead of the game. If you are a forward you may find yourself chasing him just to get a good legal bump or tackle on him instead of what you are supposed to be doing.

Did you even read what I wrote? I specifically said Richmond did it to Hawthorn this week, and that Mitchell laughed at Cotchin when he tried. And if you think hawthorn hardly do it then you are blind.

That is a fair call.

The other thing that annoys me is when our player has the ball an opponent grabs him and throws him hard into the ground, it's really not fair I should be allowed to kick the ball in peace lol
Seriously some of you need to follow another sport before you actually kill this one off.
What do you suggest?

Contact - Goal Defence stand aside

Dudes, calm down. I didn't say anything about outlawing it. I just said it annoys me and I don't think it is tough in any way at all.

I hear what you are saying OP but its all theater. What is not theater is the off the ball dog hits done by cowards. A perfect example of that was Libba king hitting knights when his back was turned, will never forgive him that. It was one reason I was so hard on conca, luckily he is young enough to get that out of his game.

What a strange thread.

Reminds me of leave Britney alone.

Having seen Brad Scott slowly erode the fabric of football in general and his attempts to destroy Norths culture, this is too much.

I also enjoy the player retirements without bothering to mention the club or culture.

The calling off games in the wet.

The ass fiddling of opposition players and coaches.

The sooking about a roof.

The direction to not stand up for team mates.

What the game needs is more whiny bich coaches and supporters of nuffy clubs explaining their dislike of important parts of the theatre and cultures of success.

If you watch other sports you'll notice the players line up on opposite sides of the field in almost all cases.

The thing is, it still happens in many of them. Rugby league and union, players are targeted for a bit of special attention - whether it be a little bit of niggle in a tackle, or a slightly late hit after a kick. All done for the same reason they do it in Aussie rules - to put the opposition off a little.

this reminds me of when i was playing soccer as a striker. this one defender stood next to me with his arm stretched out in front of me like i was a car and he was a boomgate stopping me from parking in David Jones. i didn't get it and kept pushing it down. but of course you realise this is just what opponents do in sport, to get inside your head. i assume the pushing around stoppages is just to give your opponent something extra to think about. why would you not niggle them - so they're focused on is the next play? doesn't it make more sense to try and get in their head, make them think of something else? even just standing right in front of them is annoying and will distract them, even for a second, due to not being able to see. every distraction is a win, isn't it?

the stoppage is a tough place to be, all those little wins add up. i don't think it's a "bad look for the game", ducking into tackles and then looking up at the umpire like a sook is.

Cotchin genuinely tough?? lol

Saddest faux tough guy going. How can him and his bouffant hair be taken seriously?

Especially given he has only found his big boy pants cause his coach told him it was big boy month. Laughable and loved Mitchell's sheer amusement at his pathetic antics.
