His mates were both going to the AIS academy as well so it's a fair chance they would have been drafted as well in a couple of weeks.

I hope footy works out for him, doesn't sound like he is too keen on school! He will play Round 1.

How does he sound like Nathan Brown?

I know the draft is a while away yet but is anyone else worried that the club hasn't offically made announcement about who we are going to pick?

"a bit of a lad who had no interest in schoolwork"
"People think he is a bit of a ratbag"
"with a self-confessed hatred of anything scholastic"
"his laid-back attitude"

This is exactly the kind of stuff said about Brown.

Freaky goals are included in the package which was also a trait of Brown.

No.

These big wraps are making me nervous. As a bulldog supporter its almost like too much to hope on the kid to be our own version of nathan buckley. Can we possibly expect to have cooney playing well from round 1, AND get Rawlings, AND get a fantastic season from Granty at CHB?

Dunno about Browny but it sounds exactly like me. I couldnt kick the freakish goals though. In fact I couldnt even kick.

And somehow, if he does turn out to be a star, we have to hope he doesn't follow too closely in Browny's footsteps in a few years time. :(

The other thing about him is his pace - exhilarating. One of the highlights of the carnival was when Cooney just burst free of a pack and was running towards goal. Sensing he was about to be caught, he simply accelerated like the Road Runner leaving Wile E Coyote and then kicked a goal from 50 metres.

hmmmm.

Hopefully with the added height in our squad we never have to see those types of moves again unless trying something different on a given day.

I liked your version better - not only did he steal it, he stuffed it up! 'once likened to catroon character roadrunner' ???

GOALden, you wouldn't expect the great wordsmiths of the Herald Sun to have to come up with their own stories now, would you? :)

No he will leave him on the Bench until three Quater time, whilst we are getting beat by 78 points and then will play Carlick Full foward.

Put this into Media Watch on the ABC

David Marr, who works for the Sydney Morning Herald, would have a field day with this.

Nah, it doesn't worry me that much - maybe I heard Cooney compared to the road runner by someone else and copied them!

I'll be generous and put it down to a coincedence - I remember Kevin Sheahan stole a lot of Colin Wisbey's lines last year when describing him.

Mocca from HHQ has had quite a bit of his 2001 Preliminary Final review appear almost word for word in the AFL Book of Finals, and I had a piece on the last time we beat Essendon appear in the Age the following day - both times no credit was given.

Back to Cooney, you would hope Rohde does play him Round 1, and perhaps on a flank to take the heat off him a bit. He will be targeted early on by opposition players.

Cooney would slot beautifully onto a half forward flank at the Dogs.

He would have a combination of Darcy, Rawlings and Bandy to take the big guys. Brad Johnson to take the best mid sized defender. We will have a specialist crumber in Gia, Gilbee, Faulkner or Garlick buzzing about the big guys leaving Cooney to take a half forward line position on one of the lesser defenders. A good way to bring him in. You can almost build a case for Raph Clarke here to work in tandem with that lot as well couldn't you ;) .

A lot of people on the draft forum seem to be in denial over Clarke's talent. Most of them have him slotting into the Saints to be with his brother but he has some strong claims to go a fair bit earlier than that. I have previously stated that this fascination for joining brothers at a club is nothing more than a nonsense and if we deem Clarke to be the best available then we should consider him.
He is of a good size and could develop into a 3rd tall defender or forward and he has a good burst of pace. He could also just slot into the team on a wing or as midfielder such is his versatility.
He makes some errors with his decision making at times however, it is more to do with his enthusiasm than necessarily making poor choices. I saw him twice before the carnival and was suitably impressed. One game at Vic Park was a real gem.
I would give him strong consideration.

Thank God - I'm not the only one! My NT profiles are going up next week, I give Clarke a huge wrap. I can only assume most of the people writing him off didn't see him play in the carnival last year (where he was AA and would have been a top 10 pick last year) or in the warm-up games.

I saw him in that game at Vic Park (against Gippsland?) and he was excellent, spent a lot more time on the ball. Then in the Challenge Cup at Princes Park he was even better for mine.

The only thing that will hold Clarke back is his attitude - but if he goes after pick 6 think of me getting upset somewhere, that was the pick Hawthorn gave away as part of the Jacobs deal.

He is a very talented player that everyone rated highly in 2002 however, after a few negative comments on BF he all of a sudden became damaged goods. I am glad you saw those game as well early in the season because too often people tend to write players off after one bad game. That is why I think it is ideal to see a junior player at least 4 times before you really want to write him off or claim him as a cant miss player.
