Four quarters required

Lions livewire Dayne Zorko says his side can’t bank on another record-breaking comeback getting them over the line against ladder-leaders Hawthorn this Sunday in Tasmania.

Instead, Zorko and his teammates will need to reproduce that same level of effort and intensity shown in the final term against Geelong last weekend for the full 120 minutes if they want to snap the Hawks’ 11-game winning streak.

“We really need to string together four consistent quarters, and we’re just not doing that at the moment,” Zorko told Dom Fay and Michael Whiting as part of this week’s Fancast on LIONS TV. “We’re competitive for three quarters, but if we can string together a good strong four-quarter effort, I think the boys would take a lot more confidence from that than just a good two or three quarters from every game.”

Brisbane midfielder Dayne Zorko to let actions do talking in Q Clash against Gold Coast

DAYNE Zorko was at the centre of a war of words in the build-up to the last Q Clash. But the Brisbane midfielder plans to let his actions do the talking when the Lions host the Gold Coast in the latest instalment of the Sunshine Stoush at the Gabba tomorrow.

The former Broadbeach star said tomorrow's match-up was not about him. It was about Brisbane claiming its fifth-straight Q Clash win and retaining bragging rights in Queensland. "We're putting everything on the line," Zorko said. "We want to really stamp our authority that we are the number one team in Queensland. "We want to be the dominant side in Queensland and probably Gold Coast at the moment they're probably going better than us. "It's a rivalry that we want to keep growing and there's no easy four points in this competition and there wouldn't be this weekend either."

Zorko said the Brisbane playing group always lifted when playing their Queensland counterparts and would look to rebound after their disappointing loss to Hawthorn in Launceston last week. "It's a Q Clash, so everyone's going to be right, they're going to do everything that's possible. Everyone will be ready."

No hard feelings: Zorko
5 July 2013
Michael Whiting

Brisbane Lions livewire Dayne Zorko denied he'd felt any particular pressure from the Suns, who traded him to their neighbours prior to the 2012 season. Speaking on Friday, the 24-year-old said he'd moved on from any issues relating to his potential club. "That's all swept under the carpet now and I'm here with Brisbane for the next three years so I'm focused on that," Zorko said.

He said his main aim was extending the Lions' streak over the Suns to five successive matches. "We want to be the dominant side in Queensland, and Gold Coast are probably going better than us," he said.
"I think every time you play them it's even. It's a rivalry we want to keep growing."

Talking points: Brisbane Lions v Gold Coast

1. Zorko bites hand that almost fed himDayne Zorko played down any ill-feeling towards the team that overlooked him in the build up to the second QClash of the season but his prolonged fist pumps to the crowd after his third goal in the last quarter showed exactly what the match meant to him. He did not have his best game in the Lions’ two-point win on the Gold Coast in the first QClash of the season and again was far from at his busiest with just 11 disposals, but he kicked three superb goals at the Gabba. All of his majors came from open play with the last opening a four-goal lead midway through the last quarter to effectively end the contest.

Zorko charged

Dayne Zorko could still be available to face North Melbourne this Saturday despite being charged with a level two striking offence by the AFL Match Review Panel on Monday.

Zorko was cited for an incident involving Gold Coast defender Tom Murphy during the first quarter of last Saturday’s QClash at the Gabba.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Gold Coast Suns Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and groin contact (two points).

This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a level two offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction.

With no existing good or bad record, an early guilty plea will reduce the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record.

A lot of verbal directed at Wilkinson. Really tried to get under his skin. I get the feeling it was pre-planned.

He just about tagged him out if the last game, will probably be the go to match up every game with those two.

According to the stats on footywire, last night Zorko registered a hit out. Not bad for someone of his stature!

Toby Greene got one in the GWS game so they could match up in a couple of weeks.

I'd rather not get those two choreographing too much. They could break out in a cautionary Oompa Loompa song from Willing Wonka and the Chocolate Factor.

No-one wants that.

I do now.

Zorko says Brisbane must embrace MCG challenge

BRISBANE forward Dayne Zorko says the Lions must embrace the rare opportunity to play at the MCG to have any hope of beating finals-bound Richmond tomorrow.

The Lions will make their only trip to the home of football this year to face the in-form Tigers, who have excelled on the hallowed turf in 2013.

Richmond has won seven of its 10 MCG matches this season, including its past five at the venue which include victories against Hawthorn, Fremantle and Adelaide.

Zorko kicked three goals in his MCG debut in Round 12 last year against Hawthorn. Brisbane have lost eight of their past 10 outings at the ground, but Zorko said the venue should hold no fears for any ambitious footballer.

While his second season hasn't been brilliant he has been solid and consistent.

I think he's just spent a lot more time up forward this year. Being second in the comp for pressure acts inside 50 is a great effort.

He's been getting the ball less but kicking more goals, I think the coaches would want him back in the midfield once his tank properly gets up to AFL level.
