Fitzroy
7,084 - 1996
7,494 - 1995

Fitzroy simply didn't have the support to be a club playing in a national competition.

Simple as that.

Comparing uneven samples of games at suburban grounds vs CBD stadiums, 20 years apart.

What could possibly go wrong.

As rough as it was on Fitzroy, you think another team in Melbourne would be good for the AFL, which is supposed to be a national competition? ?

They could have survived just as well as the other smaller Melbourne clubs I think is the point. They were targeted.

In any case given their own destiny, they may well be based in Canberra or Tassie by now. Or merged with North.

Tough question here for those in the know....but could Fitzroy ask for an AFL license and relocate to Tasmania or Canberra? Could it be feasible?

I bet the CEO of the AFL back then would have some dirty secrets hidden away. Such a shame. Spat them to the curb.
Ross Oakley is who you speak of.

His book, written two years ago or so, was a predictably one-sided apologist tome of rubbish that was notable mainly for its complete lack of acknowledgement (not that it's surprising) of the dirty tactics he used to white ant Fitzroy.

The Fitzroy story is what pulled me into the history side of the AFL. Absolutely criminal what the AFL did to them. If they still existed in their own right in the modern league I'd like to think I'd support them. The jumper, the song, the colours, the club identity.. Absolute shame they were neglected. A founding club of the league no less!

To me, it's akin to the Premier League going "Y'know who we don't need anymore? Liverpool! They haven't done anything too great league wise for ages, so let's just muffle them with a pillow and hope everyone forgets about them sooner rater than later".

Which part? The request for or the tassie/act side of it? Or both? Why?

I don't know the finer points but I think Brisbane Bears-Fitzroy Football Club is already in the AFL. They have the Lion emblem, the colours and the song.

They'd probably have to give it up, which I doubt they'd do given their history with it is one of the few things they have going for them at the moment (2001 - 03)

Thanks for your reply/info. I would like to know the finer details tho, because I think it was stated elsewhere that the Bears essentially bought out or replaced the Lions and it wasn't a true merger; why Fitzroy Lions still exists as a separate club in the VFL.

This kind of bullshit is exactly why it's so easy to love footy, but to hate the AFL.

Unbelievable that, after 20 years, these pricks are still trying to justify their willful killing off of a foundation club, and re-writing the history of how it happened and the response of fans.

I'm across most of the fitzroy story and yes seems very pro AFL version of events

The most surprising thing though was alastair lynch being named AA full back kicking 68 goals.
Was playing full back in first 6 to 7 rounds of season then swing man role that year mostly full forward for the other 70% of season.

I went to a game in 1993 where we were 16 points down to Fitzroy.
Kernahan was not playing and we won by 86 points after Silvagni moved to full forward.
Lynch kicked 6 goals
Silvagni 10 goals.

Round: 16 Venue: Princes Park Date: Sat, 17-Jul-1993 2:00 PM Attendance: 24987
Fitzroy 3.3.21 10.6.66 11.8.74 14.11.(95)
Carlton 2.4.16 7.8.50 18.14.122 27.19.(181)
Qrt margin FI by 5, FI by 16, CA by 48, CA by 86

Was a pity Lynch got seriously sick soon after going to Brisbane with chronic-fatigue syndrome.
He was a shadow of the brilliant player we saw at Fitzroy in his earlier years.

This was probably last season Fitzroy had a half decent team. They won 10 games.
