The ama, the nurses, and the aged care lobby have been pushing for this law for years

Sorry, would that be the AMA which is opposing VAD legislation in WA after opposing it in Victoria, on behalf of the majority of doctors and nurses who want nothing to do with ending the lives of their patients prematurely?

Honestly can't believe you'd put this forward as fact. As recently as 2016 they stated that "The AMA believes that doctors should not be involved in interventions that have as their primary intention the ending of a person’s life."

They don't oppose it in principle, they just want the nurses and clinicians to do it for them

Fwiw it's a typical political response from the ama

The federal government have gotten very used to abrogating spending responsibility onto the states.

In the power generation area on the east coast it is the reverse, the States have stuffed it & are trying to get the Feds to pick up the tab - interesting that WA havent dropped the ball.

You stated that the AMA has been pushing for euthanasia legislation for years - so provide proof, given that they opposed that very legislation in Victoria and are currently opposing it in WA and have never publically pushed for euthanasia because they have consistently desired instead for greater support for palliative care.

They rejected specific legislation FFS. Don't confuse the issue with legislation

The states have always had spending responsibilities. The problem has come via the federal government becoming bigger than the states.
Sure.

However they are leaning more heavily on the states to pickup shortfalls in education, infrastructure spending and investment.

I think Victoria went over half a decade with the LNP not actually releasing a measly 2 or so billion in promised infrastructure grants.

In the opinion of whom?

It's kind of the whole point of euthanasia, you decide when your life should end.

The AMA's position is a legally worded version of 'we will stop making you better and focus on making you pain free, but we won't end your life for you'. They are a bunch of lawyers more than they are a bunch of doctors. They're also like a sports team saying 'we're not going to throw games but we will do everything in our power not to win'.

The states should never be in that position in the first place. The whole point of federating was to ensure that there would be a central structure for the things that the states were ill equipped to do. These days the federal government is trying to do almost everything that the states were doing anyway.

Yes, that's why it's known as suicide. Also, irrelevant to the (wrong) statement that I was challenging.

It's usually referred to as assisted suicide. You know, because if you were up and about you could just jump off a bridge. But then if you were up an about you wouldn't want your life to end unless you had severe mental illness.

You are the one that introduced "prematurely" into the discussion.
