Gold Coast Scrapped!
After a poor 5 years in the competition, the AFL's 17th franchise, the Gold Coast Suns have been shut down by AFL executives. AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan cited financial losses stemming from poor crowd attendances, ground maintenance and marketing. The AFL decided to pull the pin on the fledgling club, stating it is not financially, nor locationally viable as an AFL Club, and has, instead, offered the 17th Franchise license to the city of Hobart, in a heavily applauded move, ending constant criticism of the notable absence of a Tasmanian team.
McLachlan noted that attendances in the TFL and local leagues had increased dramatically in the last 2 years, and had decided to give Tasmania an AFL Franchise in order to capitalise on these attendances, with the club being based out of Blundstone Arena.
Hobart has been given concessions to select one Tasmanian player from another club to sign as a "Marquee" player, and can also sign up to 5 uncontracted players from other AFL clubs, but only one per club (does not include Marquee player's club).
