Hi Footy fans...

Mother Nature can be a cruel mistress sometimes, no more evident this past weekend when the weather conditions kept a lot of people away from the five matches on offer. A big chunk of football supporters were missing in action, with little more than 7600 turning up on aggregate... not a good look, innit? But anyways, we're now into the final third of the season, with finals just over eight weeks away. The battle for the top spots is really heating up now, with the Eagles usurping top spot from the reigning premiers last week and now the middle of the premiership table is getting a shake from below with the Bulldogs starting to find a bit of form. Their path will intersect those of the Magpies and the Panthers eventually, but there's also a looming clash with West which will really put them to the test. Game on!

Welcome to the Round 13 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

Four of the five games took place on Saturday afternoon, the first of which takes us to the City Mazda Stadium at Richmond for the stoush of the sashes between the Bloods and the Tigers. It was only six rounds ago that these sides last fought, with the Bloods laying the absolute smackdown on the Tigers at Glenelg to the gap of 112 points back in Round 7. The Tigers have been on the improve, lifting from the bottom to seventh after three victories in four games, one of those coming against the Redlegs. The Bloods, on the other hand, have had the total reverse of that with one win from the last four rounds. With the Magpies breathing down their necks on equal points, the Bloods needed to find a way out of their mid-season funk. The Bloods would find themselves up by seven points at quarter-time after kicking 3.1 to two goals, but couldn't find the big sticks again in the second quarter as the Tigers went into the second half with the lead. The visitors kicked 2.2 to the Bloods single behind to be up by a goal at half-time. Westies' third quarter effort was definitely an improvement, in fact they have lost only three third quarters for the season thus far. Accuracy was the issue during this period though, the Bloods kicking 4.6 to the Tigers' 2.1 to re-take the lead by the final change, an 11 point deficit separating the two sides. The Bloods turned it on in the final term, shutting out the Tigers with a 7.4 to 3.1 last quarter to win by 38 points. Kaine Stevens was named best for the Bloods, the Tigers voted in Matt Snook as their best afield.

The second match of the Saturday arvo takes us to Coopers Stadium in Norwood for the clash of the traditional rivals in the Redlegs and the Magpies, which was the live TV match of the round. For all the history, blood, sweat and tears these two sides have put in their stoushes throughout SANFL history, none would have thought that not even a Norwood vs. Port game would draw in such a pitiful crowd despite the weather with a shade under 2200 turning out. Their last contest was a dour affair, in the more horrid conditions of Round 4 under the lights of Adelaide Oval where a lot more people braved the weather. The 'Legs were able to outlast the Magpies that Friday night with a 21-point win in a game that yielded just 12 goals. This game was going to be almost as dour, but the weather was far kinder than that of the Grand Final rematch. The Magpies kept the Redlegs scoreless in the first quarter, but could only take a 15-point lead after kicking 2.3. Norwood would eventually score in the second term, but five behinds was all they could muster. Port wasn't doing too much better at the other end, kicking 1.1 to extend their lead to 17 points. The Redlegs came back to fight in the second half, returning the first quarter favour to keep the Magpies away from goal, their own inaccuracy would stop them totally stamping out the visitors as Norwood kicked to a two-goal lead at three quarter-time after scoring 4.5 for themselves. The Magpies would pepper their goal in the final quarter, but time and accuracy would not be on their side as they went down by the narrowest of margins. They scored 3.5 to Norwood's two goals to lose by one point. Michael Chippendale was named best for the 'Legs, the Magpies named Aaron Young as their best on ground.

Match number three for the weekend finds us heading to the inner south, the Peter Motley Oval in Unley the venue for the match between the Double Blues and the Eagles. Much like the previous match, these sides played out a low-scoring contest in their last meeting, in fact there was just nine goals kicked in that Round 8 game where the Eagles won by 17 points at Oval Avenue. Before that, the Blues inflicted a 40-point humiliation at the same venue, but at Unley the Eagles had the last laugh. Back in Round 4 last year, the Eagles and the Blues fought out a hell of a match with the visitors nicking the one-goal win in a match that saw 32 goals kicked. This was another match to suffer the elements with a low tally of goals kicked, the Eagles' inaccuracy preventing more than just a single major kicked in the opening term. They scored 1.4 to the Blues' one behind to take a nine-point lead at quarter-time. The Eagles would stretch their advantage to 16 points by the half-time break, adding a further 2.1 to Sturt's one goal in the second quarter. Sturt's best chances would come in the third quarter, but their best chances in the form of set shots would spray wide as the Eagles kicked further ahead to 28 points by the final change after kicking 3.3 to 1.3 in the third term. In the end, the Eagles would stretch their winning streak to 11 and their sixth in succession at Oxford Avenue. The Blues horrid accuracy on goal would be the difference maker in the end as they kicked 3.4 to the Eagles' two goals as the visitors took a three-goal win. Jarred Allmond was named best for the Eagles, while Sturt named Michael Coad as their standout.

The fourth Saturday arvo match takes us up north to the Playford Alive Oval in Elizabeth where the Bulldogs faced the Crows. It was the Bulldogs that the Crows tasted their first SANFL victory against, but the two matches that followed would see the Dogs take their revenge, their last meeting in Round 8 saw the Crows go down by 20 points. This match was Adelaide's return to the field after the tragic loss of senior team coach Phil Walsh, with some expecting the Crows to be lacking in intensity and passion. They would only be half-right, the Dogs' recent form suggesting that they are a team on the climb and the improve. The Bulldogs had the better of the contest early on, starting off with a 3.2 to one goal opening quarter to lead by 14 points. The Crows lifted in the second quarter, but the Dogs still stretched their advantage a little by the long break after they scored four goals to the Crows' 3.1. At half-time the Bulldogs held a 19-point lead. The Crows could have brought the gap back more than they did by the final change had they been more accurate, but they only chipped a couple of points off Centrals' lead come three quarter-time, Adelaide's 2.2 to the Dogs' two goals bringing the deficit back to 17 points. In the end the Crows just had no more to give in the face of a Bulldogs outfit that has been building confidence over the last couple of weeks. The Dogs kept the visitors to just two behinds whilst kicking 3.2 for themselves to take a 35-point victory. Luke Habel scored a beauty in the second quarter and was named best on ground for Centrals, while the Crows named Matthew Spencely as their best.

The final match of the weekend sees the action shift to Sunday afternoon, we now head down south to the Hickinbotham Oval in Noarlunga where the Panthers faced the Roosters in the SANFL's version of the Civil War. The last three matches between the two teams have been all blue & white, the Panthers winning both at home and away with their most recent victory coming in Round 4 at Prospect where they nicked a 16-point win. But it was Noarlunga where South really hammered it home on the Roosters, in Round 12 last season the Panthers inflicted a horrid 13-goal pounding in their breakthrough season. North's 2015 has been one horror after another, resulting in a coach being shown the door and sitting at the bottom of the ladder... and it wasn't going to get any better for the struggling Roosters. The Panthers would tear strips off the Roosters little by little, but it wasn't going to be truly evident until after the first quarter, where the Panthers scored 3.2 to North's 1.2 to lead by two goals at the first change. The punishment would begin once the second term term concluded, which is where the Roosters were brought to a screeching halt. They would kick their last goal for the match here, scoring 1.3 to 2.1 as the Panthers went into the break with a 16-point lead. The Roosters would score just three behinds in the third term while the Panthers added a further 4.2 to stretch the deficit to 39 points by the final change. It would be just another forgettable afternoon for the North faithful, their team adding just one behind to their final score while the Panthers added 4.3 to take a 65-point win. Joel Cross made his opponents look like witches hats in his best on ground appearance for South, the Roosters named Toby Schulz as their best on a lousy afternoon.
