Now, where can I get some info on these players I've never heard of?

Daniel Cerni, Max Beaumont, Ben Jamieson, Joey Kenna - all GWS U18 Academy members from ACT, not selected for Game 2 of the Division 2 series (Jamieson & Kenna played the first game)
Baily McParland - Camden junior, GWS U17 Academy squad
Nathan Coxall - Kellyville/Rouse Hill junior, GWS U17 Academy squad
Billy Robertson - looks like he's an Albury player, same GWS Academy class as Setterfield & Cumming but I don't see his name in the 2017 GWS U18 Academy list.

Nice win by the NEAFL Giants - a little unexpected for mine given so many changes of personnel. 19.11.125 to 15.7.97.
Setterfield, Corr, Sproule, Flynn, Himmelberg all looked really solid. Some strong showing by a couple of the top-ups too - will be excited to watch young Baily McParland's progress in the next few years, he looks like he has great potential, hopefully he can keep developing.

Ok, some thoughts on the NEAFL match. We missed the first quarter where they lead comfortably, but it was never really in doubt from there on in, though they had more listed players and less top-ups than us I understand.

Players who impressed:

Setterfield - won't be playing NEAFL long if he plays like that.
Kennedy (M) - poise
Corr - solid down back, will be back soon enough (was wearing a glove on his injured hand)
Tizziani - that extra year has done wonders
Flynn - less lean and ropey than last year but still goes in hard and can clunk a mark
Sproule - knows where the sticks are
Stein - not as far behind as I thought he might be, got a nice kicking action and seems at home at this level.

As I said earlier, liked #53, didn't do as much in the second half, but looked good early. #48 & 49 did some nice things and nobody embarrassed themselves.

Need Grimlock to do his usual post of the pointscorers, but Coxall was the best performed (points-wise) of the top ups. Couple of unlisted top-ups, and it would appear the listed emergency (Edwards) actually played in the Div 2 game. A couple more of those performances will nudge Setterfield in front of Matty Kennedy for the first team opportunity, although Matty didn't do anything wrong.

http://neafl.com.au/setterfield-stuns-as-giants-out-muscle-gold-coast/

Will Setterfield has announced himself to the AFL world with a spectacular performance in Round 1 of the NEAFL as the GIANTS defeated Gold Coast by 28 points at Spotless Stadium. The No.5 draft pick from last year was brilliant in his NEAFL debut, collecting 33 disposals and booting three goals, as his team ran over the top of Gold Coast in the second half to win 19.11 (125) to 15.7 (97). Joining Setterfield amongst the GIANTS’ best included Matthew Kennedy (30 disposals) and Zach Sproule (five goals).

Gold Coast’s best included Brandon Matera (31 disposals, four goals) and Brayden Florini (29 disposals, two goals). Despite a spirited first half effort from the Suns, during which they led for the first quarter and a half, the GIANTS proved too classy despite their opponents’ superior experience. The final margin was five goals, with plenty of players from both sides staking their claim that they belong in the top flight.

Gold Coast flew out of the blocks, with Matera kicking two early goals and first grade best-and-fairest runner up Jarrod Harbrow collecting 10 of his 20 disposals in the first quarter. The GIANTS’ Harry Himmelberg also showed how desperate he is to regain his position in the first team, matching Harbrow with 10 disposals in defence. At the end of the first term, it was the Suns by three goals, but after the break, the Setterfield show begun. The GIANTS Academy prospect showed why he has been compared to Marcus Bontempelli, snagging one goal from a set shot and another on the run, both from 50 metres out.

The Suns had a chance to maintain their lead, but were diabolical inside their forward 50. Missed set shots and poor decision making squandered what little chances they created to hit the scoreboard. At the other end, it was Setterfield not only scoring goals, but also setting them up. His penetrating run through the midfield was a game buster for his side, helping them take a 15-point lead into half-time. The Suns started the second half much the way they did the first – at a temperature resembling that of their team nickname. For the first half of the third quarter, it looked as if Gold Coast would run over the top of their opponents, as they regained their lead with three goals in a row out of the sheds. The Suns would not go away. Brandon Matera provided one of the highlights of the match, kicking one of his four goals from 50 metres out on the boundary line to keep his side in it.

But it was the GIANTS doing what Gold Coast could not in the first half – making the most of their inside 50s when under the pump. The western Sydney side put through three majors from or outside 50 metres out, extending their lead to four goals. Early into the fourth quarter, the match was gone. The GIANTS had extended their lead to a game high six goals, with some of the Suns players showing that fitness was a big reason for them missing senior selection.

Next week, the GIANTS return to their spiritual home of Blacktown to host Sydney University, whilst Gold Coast visits Redland at Tidbold Park.

Definitely only a matter of time before Setterfield and Corr get senior games this year, although with the senior team in form, it may take an injury/suspension opportunity to arise.

Was a little disappointed in Isaac Cumming. After the hype late in the draft period, I was expecting more, but seemed to panic a lot every time he got the ball. Hopefully just a case of first game jitters that he can overcome.

Plenty of time for Cumming to get use to the step up from underage footy and not sure who played in defence but he did have some experience around with Mohr and Corr in the backline and then Simpson in the ruck were the only players with more than 2 years senior experience (Lloyd but he played suburban footy i think?)
Shows how much experience the squad lost and with Mzungu out for half the year and MDB injured it will be interesting to see later on in the season where the team is placed

Probably first time in a long time that the Giants had fewer listed players than their opposition.

NEAFL ROUND 2

GIANTS v Sydney University

Saturday, April 7 at BISP, 4.30pm

SUMMARY

Two of the competitions biggest premiership contenders will lock horns in an early season blockbuster when defending premier the GIANTS takes on Sydney University at Blacktown on Saturday afternoon. Both teams are coming off comfortable Round 1 victories and will be keen to flex their muscles for an early confidence boost at the start of the year. The inclusion of Jonathon Patton for the GIANTS will see heads turn as the big forward makes his return from a groin injury. The Students have concerns with former Swans forward Xavier Richards and former Brisbane midfielder Zac O’Brien set to miss the 4.30pm match, but their side still boats some firepower capable of testing the GIANTS to their limits.

TALKING POINTS

1. You need to look no further than the GIANTS forward line to find the big news story of the round, with former No.1 draft pick Jonathan Patton is sure to cause headaches for the Sydney University defence. Tim Barton is the most experienced option to tackle the 197cm and 102kg big man. But will rookie coach Tom Morrison hand the challenge to teenage defender Darcy Baron-Hay? It’s a match-up worth keeping your eye on.

2. The GIANTS are a new-look side in 2017 compared to the one which conquered all last season their way to a maiden premiership. But what the GIANTS may lack in age, they make up for in talent. Their comeback victory against a strong Suns outfit last week showed the club is still capable of doing some damage, led by a new wave of young guns.

3. The Students were smashed by 87 points by the GIANTS in last year’s Preliminary Final for a second consecutive loss in the penultimate match of the season. While there are plenty new faces in the Students side this time around, an early season win after three consecutive losses to their rivals will be just what the club is after.

ROOKIE WATCH

GIANTS draftee Will Setterfield made the AFL world stand up and notice last week with an incredible debut performance, picking up 33 disposals, 11 marks, seven clearances, seven inside 50s and three goals. If he backs up that effort this week, it won’t be long before he earns an AFL debut.

STATS THAT MATTER

The Students have only won once against the GIANTS since they entered the NEAFL in 2012. Their last victory came in Round 21, 2015, when Tom Young starred and earned eight NEAFL MVP votes to clinch the award in stunning fashion.

PREDICTION

Sydney University by 20 points.

Sydney University by 20 points.
I would actually like to be there but wont be to see Cummin and Tiziani play. Still thinking they'll come good through the year.

If anyone I see planning to go to the game it would be great to see a write up on some of the standout players, and also positions more so for the drafters
Some questions I would be interested in about the game
Can Sproule back up the 5 goal game
How does Stein go in his 2/3 game, it will be interesting to see how his more mature body stands out
if Kennedy spends significant time forward like he would if he was playing seniors
