Hey music folk, I'm looking at getting into electric guitar and need some advice from people who play or have played. I'm fairly handy on an acoustic but have never touched an electric so have no idea of the ins and outs.

I'm looking for a guitar that can produce the sort of Beatles/50s rockabilly type sound, any recommendations? I'm looking at spending <$1000 for the guitar. As for amps, will any old amp do??

Also is it better to go into a music store or order online? I know it's better to probably PLAY the guitar before you buy it but I can watch youtube vids and get a rough idea of the sound produced.

Cheers for any help.

No. Any old amp won't do.

The best advice I ever heard re electric guitar is that the guitar and the amp together are ONE instrument.

Further to that, as I've progressed, I've come to feel that the amp is MORE important to your sound, and your feel than the guitar

If you looking at that vibe, guitar-wise, check out the Gretsch Electromatic range, and also the Epiphone hollowbodies, the Casino and the Sheraton...these are in your price range.

More importantly, if you want to nail a Beatlesque sound (IMHO), check out the Vox range of tube amps.

Mind you, with valves, this will go towards $2000 or more just for the amp, so you might have to shop around for a good solid state amp instead..Peavey Transtube amps have a pretty good sound...(but if you really want the Beatles vibe, and can afford a Vox AC15, or 30, go for it...the rest will be down to your fingers)

Once you gone through a cranked tube amp, though, solid state amps will never cut it with you again

Good luck.

Learn to play acoustic well before you get an electric cos someone who cant play sounds horrible amplified. Learn licks and lead style stuff.

And so much this.

Avoid solid state cos they never sound good unless you wanna play heavy s**t.

Get a valve amp like a fender blues junior.
