"Was selected in the final two games for Western Australia at the National Championships with his intercept marking a feature. Was a consistent performer for Claremont at Colts level averaging 15.2 disposals in 13 matches." - Kevin Sheehan

Western Australian tall Zane Zakostelsky was a late bloomer this year, with his final appearance for Claremont's Colts in their premiership-winning side his standout performance for 2023.

The North Beach junior stands at 196cm tall and can play as a key defender or work across the field as a ruckman, with Zakostelsky showing his pedigree as a multi-positional player for the Tigers this year.

Zakostelsky was named best afield in Claremont's Colts Grand Final thanks to his 22-disposal and 18-hitout performance against Perth, linking up with top-rated WA prospect Dan Curtin to clinch the flag.

That outing would cap off a strong second half to 2023 for Zakostelsky, who started his Colts campaign as a ruckman before moving into a split role.

At October's AFL Draft Combine, the teenager recorded top 10 finishes in four of the five tests and took out the top score for the standing vertical jump with an 80cm leap.

A player with Zakostelsky’s physical attributes is an appetising prospect, so it is no surprise his strong late-season form has seen him firm as a possible selection inside the first two rounds. Given his rawness, there is an air of mystery about just how good Zakostelsky could be at AFL level, but if a club can nurture his athletic traits and develop him well, they may be rewarded with a unique player who has plenty of weapons to thrive in the modern game.

His highlights look pretty impressive. In a league that seems to have a shortage of key position players... I wonder what kept him from going earlier in the draft 🤔
coming out of defence, his short kicking will be an area for improvement going forward

But the other consistent theme with Zakostelsky is not so positive – his kicking. It is a reason not to draft him for some recruiters, but others think it’s fixable and could have him taken closer to pick 25.

Not unexpected given he's only a recent transition to Aussie Rules.

Yeah his disposal by foot is bad. Like really bad. But hopefully in a full time environment he can improve rapidly.

In most of the clips I have seen it only really shows his marking and agility clips, not much of his kicking.
He does look to have a decent long and penetrating kick though, obviously not much for accuracy.

Just bomb it long down the line like Oscar does, no need for nuance from ZZ?

Oscar is usually sending it into a congested forward dump off.

ZZ would be sending it into the arms of an opposition zone.

I think he'll get there with his kicking, since he's probably a KPD in the making in general his disposals won't be high pressure - it'll be chip/mark or after an intercept. It's just practice.
