    It seems to me that some footy clubs feel obliged to hold on to players who have influence around the club well after they have passed their prime. Perhaps they fear a backlash from the players or supporters or both. If they have players who are good at sitting in the coach's box or patting...

    Thanks for the replies :thumbsu: It struck me a while ago that the terms "league football" and "league footballers" are probably a legacy of the old VFL days and were probably once used to indicate some kind of superiority over "association football".
