    Unused cells have no format, until you use them (which is what you did by applying default formats to them). Highlight the area that you don't want to use, then go to Edit -> Clear -> Clear All. This will remove any formatting etc applied to the selected cells and resave your workbook once...

    Chase has refuted most 'clues' from final episode recaps in a recent interview - google will find the interview for you. He said something along the lines of it being quite obvious, not at all subtle. The flashback to the lake is all that is needed to complete the ending.
