I've read a lot of hysteria about the proposed mining tax. Unfortunately most of the opinions so far, both for and against, have been lacking some real figures as to the effective change in tax rates.
Here's the table
There's a lot of data I'm lacking, primarily a break down of how many...
Firstly, this is NOT intended to be a catholic bashing thread.
Anyway...
Linga, you seem to be someone who's thought through their beliefs significantly more than most people. Why are you a catholic? If you had been born in India, would it just have been bad luck, and you would have missed...
From an article.
Personally, though I'm not into it myself, if no-one is harmed I can't see why there is a law against it. To my mind it's similar to a guy beating off to an image of schoolkids in the newspaper. Unsavoury yes, but it doesn't really hurt anyone. Am I alone here, or is...
Just read this today, here are the links it's based on. The summary is that 3 deaths at guantanamo bay in 2006 were ruled suicides, but almost certainly were not. Somehow the bodies hung there for 2 hours unnoticed despite guards walking past the chicken wire on 3 sides cell every 10 minutes...
Reading through the Hurley thread, there were a bunch of links to various AFL players who had either been convicted of a crime, or been admitted to a diversionary program which involved admitting guilt. I thought it might be helpful to have a comprehensive list. I've put in the few that I know...
There's a billboard near where I live with the message "Read Your Bible". Personally I think this is a great idea, as I think that people should have a good understanding of what they profess to believe in. At the very least, they would realize that there's a whole lot of stuff in there that...
http://hungrybeast.abc.net.au/stories/dust-mud-shit-extended-interview
Hungry beast has put up an unauthorized interview with 'Tom' an Australian soldier (special forces I think) in Afganistan. Definitely worth listening to. There has been almost no media access to ADF soldiers, so this is...
Surely this is some kind of joke. I can't believe that a bunch of people sat down and thought, "I wonder what the best way to spend $36,000 million is? I know! Submarines!" With that sort of money we could put a team of six on Mars for half a year and bring them back. Note: This is not a...
I can think of a few players talking about just how tough an AFL preseason is. Aker said near the start of the year that he didn't want to go through another one, and Robert Campbell mentioned that it was something he wouldn't miss about the game.
So what is it that makes it so tough...

The money quote: "Management often dictates an editorial line it wants reporters to take that is in conflict with what our contacts say. Much of a day can be wasted trying to find one person to say what...
Opening bounce- Ablett, Bartel and Ling line up on Hayes, Dal Santo and Jones. Who do we want Ling standing next to? We know he can shut down NDS, he's done it so many times that it's easy to forget how good a player Nick can be, just look at his performance last week. On the other hand...
According to The Age
Normally I rate us a better side in the wet. Our big-bodied midfield shines, and our smaller forward line becomes more important. Against the Saints though I'm not so sure, I don't know whether it'll make it easier or harder to get through their zone, and their tackling...
According to this article
I haven't heard anything else about this though, can anyone else confirm?
Congrats if he has, I really rate this award. The previous winners are:
2003 Buckley
2004 Tredrea
2005 Hall
2006 Goodes/ Goodwin
2007 Ablett
2008 Ablett
This one certainly isn't a...
I'm currently desperately searching for ways to procrastinate, so help me. If you have any maths questions, ask, and I'll do my best to answer. This means:
- Actual questions, i.e. "What is the integral of sin(x).exp(x)?"
- Explanations, i.e. "Why does the quadratic formula work?", "How can...
Pretty self explanatory really. Replace this if you want with 'When was the last time you realised you were wrong?'. The belief should be something you'd thought about a bit and were pretty sure that you were right about. There is one rule for this thread, every post you make has to be...
The MRP rules currently put the panel in a couple of absurd situations.
The first is a bump like Stephen King's this week. The panel has no choice but to say that it's intentional, high impact and high contact. This carries a 6 week penalty. If, however, it had occurred in play then as I...
Hey guys, as you probably know SC points aim to quantify the things that teams do that win games. In this thread on the ever popular stats board, I compared how a team went in SC points to how they went on the scoreboard.
The upshot was that this year WC have consistently gone much better than...
SC points are designed to be a measure of the things that win football games. They are not designed to predict margins. Nonetheless, there is a strong correlation between the SC margin between the two teams, and the margin on the scoreboard. R-squared = 0.74 for those who remember some...
Hey guys, there have been quite a few threads on the SC scoring system, with opinions ranging from “it’s totally rigged so that player X always scores better than player Y” to “it’s perfect in all respects”. I thought it might be worth creating a FAQ outlining what we do know about the system...
I was reading this excellent article, linked to from here yesterday, and a particular line stood out.
With some adjustments this would be brilliant for AFL.
When a player is on the ground, calculate the score difference per 10 minutes. This might be -8 if your team is losing comfortably...
At the start of Footy Classified they briefly ran through the errors which Collingwood made which allowed Essendon to score the last few goals.
-Too many Collingwood players boundary side during a throw in, which allowed Essendon to run down the corridor.
-Nathan Brown not punching the ball...
Despite a solid 10 minutes of searching, I can't seem to find a list of aflca players of the year. I know ablett is back to back winner, and before him goodes and goodwin tied. I tend to think that it's the award that most accurately reflects who the best player is as the coaches are probably...
Normally when someone mentions the fact that their team went well in the nab cup (like Geelong), it's a race to see who can be the first to post "Carlton, nuff said" or "Geelong 2006", etc...
I thought it might be interesting to actually check the results and see if there is a relationship...

Imagine this: Carlton fight off StKilda and the Roos to keep their spot in the eight, while Collingwood move one spot up to 5th. We then get an elimination final between the two.
Collingwood lose again, so Geelong doesn't have to face them (and I get to lol).
It's a nice dream.
The problem with the AFL ladder is that it doesn't take into account which teams you have played. A team with a tough run will be ranked lower than one that has had it easy so far. As well as this, there is no point in the season where it is a fair ranking as many teams don't play each other...
Everyone knows that at this point of the season the ladder doesn’t really say much, but I thought it could be interesting* to try to quantify just how much it is telling us. A method to tell how good a ranking of teams is is to count the number of upsets- that is the number of times a team...
