Training 2026 Off-Season & Preseason reports and discussion

We didn't have anyone debut in 2025. Albeit I think Mraz would have if not for injury. And that wasn't really a big deal given how many young players we brought in across 2022-2024. We should expect growth from plenty of young established best 23 players in 2026. But given we didn't bring in...

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Aidan Schubert

I feel the teams picking above us couldn't afford to be patient is the reason why. Essendon in particular I think went too safe and similar with their 3 picks. Having 3 top 12 picks meant they should have grabbed him to pair with Caddy. I look forward in time to reminding them of this **** up...

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Matt Hill! CatB rookie, ex-Storm

Excited to see what Hill can do in year 2. A bright start at Box Hill and it would be great to see this guy as a lightning pressure forward. We can't just let damaging half-backs collect 30 on the rebound every week in 2026. Need to lock the ball in longer.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Jack Dalton

Eventually I think. But he needs to build size for that at AFL level. MM referenced the high half forward role for him initially. Clearly has the tank for that already.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Jack Dalton

We love high half forwards that can run all day. A key strength to our team. Feel we will see him multiple times across 2026. Especially if MacDonald takes to midfield. Physically (for high half forward) he's ready. Everything about his character and professionalism tells us that he will be...

Player Watch Welcome to Hawthorn, Ned Reeves. Extends to 2026 and then again to 2029!

I totally agree that Meek looked gassed towards the end of the year. Before they changed the rules last time, our numbers out of the middle were exceptional with Reeves. So reverting back to those rules and further development in Reeves is exciting. Getting first tap out of the centre could go...

Training 2026 Off-Season & Preseason reports and discussion

Great insight. Like many, I've felt for years now MacDonald will be our Zach Bailey. Just hasn't come together consistently yet. I think when it clicks he's going to be a star of the competition, mid/forward split. Moore personally I don't really rate as a mid. Both he and the team function so...

Player Watch 2025 AFL Draft Thread (Welcome to our new Central Districts overlords!)

So to all the night 1 dummy spits we didn't take a mid... We went and took 3 night 2 and rookie draft. This is why you don't reach for perceived need with early picks. There wasn't any notable mids at our first 2 picks (albeit Nairn has scope). We nailed two sliders being considered around pick...

Player Watch 2025 AFL Draft Thread (Welcome to our new Central Districts overlords!)

I love our list build since Sam took over as coach. We have a clear game style that the players are drilled in. It's been ahead of the game in many elements. Every recruiting and draft decision is just so lazer clear with what fits this style. We put a huge emphasis on development. Dingley a...

Player Watch 2025 AFL Draft Thread (Welcome to our new Central Districts overlords!)

Once it got past the top 6 picks, and Cumming who I rate so highly, the next band of picks I'm not really expecting blue chip. Although I do think Xavier Taylor will be a legit gun defender in a Maynard and Hardwick mold of making others walk taller. I think we've done exceptionally well, and...

Probably should have snapped up Dalton night 1 for all those... "But we didn't take a mid" primas Looks 'busy' which is something I think we seriously lack in the midfield and probably why Fox Footy thought of Merrett. Can legit see this guy playing in 2026. Not hard given he's the best...

Player Watch 2025 AFL Draft Thread (Welcome to our new Central Districts overlords!)

Trac is a selfish footballer that's only gotten worse as his career winds down. There's a reason he was never a leader at dees. Reckon he'll go ok this year, but not a player you want on a 4 year deal (5 for suns). Couldn't care less we didn't get him. We've got some solid assets now to try...

Unofficial Preview 2025 Hawk's Hypothetical Trade Discussion...now with added DFA spitballing!

Yeah. I really hope we land him late. But I think our recent drafting tells us if you can't run there's no room for you under Sam.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Daniel Giansiracusa

Oh sorry. I have the old school centre as part of a spine. Hence Mackenzie. Totally agree on McCabe this year too. Just need to settle him back and see what he has in 2026.

Wild. Who on earth was the top midfielder that was ever supposedly going to be available for us to take? Grlj? Maybe, but he's a project mid who was poor in the champs as a midfielder. He will play half-back. Farrow remains a project mid given he's played at half-back. No proof at all he...

Nairn is going to offer us significant flexibility and I actually wouldn't be shocked to see in 2026. A combination Sam flipping the magnets of Day, Weddle and Nairn is very exciting. Schubert is just incredibly exciting. The best key position forward in the draft and barely eligible. Will...

I really like NHH too. But can't see us trading in for him after taking Nairn

Agree. But I'm still not sure if they ****ed us also because we wanted and expected to get Lindsay. Nairn looks good regardless.

I really hope we trade back in for Greaves. But I don't know if the club rates him or not. Having 3x F2's means we would be best positioned to target bombers and blues firsts next year as they'll want to trade for points with Bewick and Walker.

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Daniel Giansiracusa

Tbh I'm not sold on him. I haven't seen much at Box Hill to make me think he's a key part of the future. I know we've tried him forward and wing which isn't his go. I'm sure he'll play back and at Box Hill this year and it will need to be a big year for him. I don't think he's ever going to...

Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Daniel Giansiracusa

Gia has a chance to develop 4/5ths of our future spine into genuine stars. Mraz Mackenzie Dear Schubert All this whilst we're a contender. We're going to be up there competing year on year for the foreseeable future. Amazing transformation under Sam.

Reminds me of Jarrad Waite who was immensely underated. Pure footballer and athlete

I'd love us to work out how Geelong play Holmes and see if we can replicate that. Holmes seems to start half -back, wing or half-forward but then play on-ball. He's not a good clearance or centre bounce player so mitigated that, but they hit him on the fly around the ball often.

Player Watch 2025 AFL Draft Thread (Welcome to our new Central Districts overlords!)

Think it sums up this draft really. After Sharp there wasn't any exposed mids left. You really want Sweid? Meh We've banked 2 F2's. If we don't bring in an a grader next trade period, we're primed to trade up in a much better draft and take a mid.

Player Watch 2025 AFL Draft Thread (Welcome to our new Central Districts overlords!)

I had us getting up for Schubert. Being linked to Heatherton told us we wanted a key forward. Just went and got the best in the draft. 10 years of him and Dear. We're set. I thought we wanted Lindsay and Schubert. Still not sure if that Eagles scramble was what we expected. But Nairn looks...

Love the pick of Nairn. Awesome size and a genuine utility. Running capacity very impressive. Great business collecting 2 X F2 along the way.

Hmm did Eagles expect Suns not to be able to match both suns academy there? Hopefully we didn't have Lindsay pegged for this move

Did we get 26 from Eagles for a one pick slide? MM come breathing fire post trade period
