Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Daniel Giansiracusa

Daniel Giansiracusa has joined Hawthorn as its new Head of Development.

The former Western Bulldogs star spent the last six seasons at Essendon, where he was tasked with a number of different coaching portfolios, including backline coach, and more recently midfield coach.

After transitioning into coaching following a 265-game career, Giansiracusa quickly established himself as one the league’s most promising coaches claiming the AFL Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020.

Executive General Manager of Football Rob McCartney said Giansiracusa’s appointment was a significant one for the club.

“Daniel’s role as Head of Development will be a very influential part of our team next year and beyond,” McCartney said.

“One of his obvious strengths is building great relationships with his players. He not only has a clear understanding of the development needs, but also has a proven ability to design and lead programs that will make our players better.

“Daniel brings a breadth of experience and knowledge, not dissimilar to when Sam Mitchell held the role as Head of Development as an aspiring AFL Senior Coach.

“We’re really excited to welcome Daniel and his family to Hawthorn, he’s high-calibre person who will bring many strengths to our club.”

All this whilst we're a contender.

We're going to be up there competing year on year for the foreseeable future. Amazing transformation under Sam.

Do you mean McCabe?

Tbh I'm not sold on him.

I haven't seen much at Box Hill to make me think he's a key part of the future. I know we've tried him forward and wing which isn't his go.

I'm sure he'll play back and at Box Hill this year and it will need to be a big year for him.

I don't think he's ever going to be key position if he makes it, however. Eerily similar to Serong.

Yeah but you said "spine" and had Mackenzie.

But I think we stuffed him around this year a bit, missed most of last year through injury we should have let him settle. We'd play him forward then throw him on the wing and then you'd hear people screaming out for him to move to half back late in a quarter, all in one game.

He had some okay games forward and on the wing.

Serong in my view should have been given more of a chance forward too.

Oh sorry. I have the old school centre as part of a spine. Hence Mackenzie.

Totally agree on McCabe this year too. Just need to settle him back and see what he has in 2026.

This is one of the great unfolding stories to watch in the coming year and years, improving your team in any professional environment is key to ongoing growth and success. Lucky to have him heading the development team, he will drive the team as much as himself. Great get by the club and Sam.

Gia's on a mission to become a senior coach, I'm sure he'll learn a lot from us while he's here. I just hope we're able to get something useful from him on his journey.

At this stage I'm as excited to have him as I was Craig McRae.
