Play Nice 2024 AFL and State League Attendance

The former was played during school holidays too. A lot of people aren't going to go to a night match if it's a school day the next day.

I suspect having around half a dozen away games that they can also easily go to in their home city might be part of the reason why member and reserved seat member attendance is lower than for the teams outside Melbourne.

Brisbane's Gabba not to be rebuilt!

Call me crazy, but given the importance and cost of the athletics stadium in hosting an Olympics, you would think this issue would have already been determined before they bid and at least before the bid was accepted. Spending $1.6b on QSAC is insane. That's politicians and the IOC for you.

Looked a very good turnout from North fans with the large majority of the crowd on the outer side wearing blue. Kudos to them for showing up after their last four seasons.

GWS is the AFL's biggest problem - not North, GC, or Tassie

The Swans of '93 were enduring their second consecutive wooden spoon and as a club had not won a final since a fortnight after the end of WW2. The Giants are premiership favourites having convincingly beaten the reigning premiers in Round 0. They have won multiple finals in 2016, 2017, 2018...

    AFL overtaking NRL in QLD

The Suns probably did more harm than good for junior football on the GC for those years as most kids usually don't want to identify with losers (the Lions were awful until 2019 too which also wouldn't have helped the sport). The Titans were also ordinary during that period. They only made...

    AFL overtaking NRL in QLD

Ausplay began collecting data in 2015 but they don't have the historical data on their website. However, AFLQ has very detailed data on their website relating to participation for all regions from 2014 to 2019 which you can see at 33 below. Club/Auskick/AFL 9's participation grew only modestly...

    AFL overtaking NRL in QLD

The AFL no doubt heavily invests in school programs on the GC (and everywhere in Qld and NSW) but independent data from Ausplay relating to the GC has RL well ahead in club participation which is the most important type. For all age groups, RL leads with 1.5% to 1.0% for AF. For those aged...

Pridham: it’s inevitable that the Sydney Swans will be the biggest sporting club in Australia

All true and FWIW, Perth's population growth has been consistently higher than Sydney's for a long time now and there is no sign that will change particularly given the latter's geographic constraints.

Play Nice 2024 Non AFL Crowds/Ratings and other Industry thread

The Storm gave their 2020 and 2021 members, free memberships in 2022 to make up for the impacts of Covid. That's why their membership revenue figure for 2022 is a poor comparison for anything.

31 degrees in Melbourne today so they were lucky to avoid hot conditions. As for the underwhelming ratings in Melbourne, you need neutrals watching. North have done a grand job in poaching stars from the Magpies and Bulldogs and you can guarantee that very few of these club's fans would have...

As long as clubs are transparent in the whole of reports (as the Saints have been), I think it's fine to include them but I agree some are misleading particularly with their website articles. One off government funding to build facilities is on one view not part of the "true" profit or loss...

    AFL overtaking NRL in QLD

I went to a high school in Melbourne with a lot of Greek kids in the early 80s. None of them could go to games due to Greek School being on a Saturday. Still, there was heaps of discussion and banter with them and others especially on Monday mornings. A lot of them also liked soccer but they...

A couple of new reports appeared on club websites today: The Saints announced a total profit of $1.7m. This though included $2.6m of government grants for their Moorabbin redevelopment. Having said that, they do have a whopping $2.2m depreciation expense on their facilities which impacts the...

    AFL overtaking NRL in QLD

I lived in the Central West of NSW in the early 80s and Sydney in the mid 90s (prior to Super League) and my observation was that interest in RL there was only about half that of AF in Melbourne and Country Victoria where I otherwise resided in those decades. Long time ago, but I doubt it has...

Does the AFL have anything to fear from the Matilda's recent success and the NRL's TV ratings?

Souttar has an Aussie mum but was born and bred in Scotland and he had not even stepped foot in Australia until he played for the Socceroos. He's not now in a EPL club but anyway he's not a good example of the strength of local Australian soccer.

By that figure I meant the 20-25k figure not the 13k one. The previous match in 2014 attracted 17k when the home team had qualified for finals. Probably would have been about that figure today.

Because its simply irrational that the bulk of these clubs fanbases would be in such circumstances and it would take a lot more than a couple of posters saying they are to convince me or any reasonable person.
