MRP / Trib. Higgins - 3 weeks for Aliir tackle

What are our thoughts on this one? Initially I agreed with Jordan Lewis- Aliir contributed to the momentum. Higgins was engaging in a relatively normal tackling motion. Then I thought, well yes but there's still a duty of care to tackle in a way that minimises risk of injury. Higgins could've...

St Kilda lost by 10 points last night

The OP seems a bit confused- the umpire paid a free kick for a dangerous tackle. The game being stopped had nothing to do with Aliir being injured per se. And Hill wasn't really kicking for goal. But, the free kick count was 25-10. Port got multiple goals from soft or 50/50 calls- one to...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

This thread is still going? Whether or not Day technically "changed direction" slightly is irrelevant. Ryder had other options. A footy player- a great ruckman actually, who constantly makes split second decisions with precision, couldn't take another course of action in that moment? Of...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

Exactly, for example scroll to 2:20 and hear Jack Riewoldt on this. Not that you need to play AFL to be able to see players in Ryder's situation make different decisions on a regular basis. All AFL players make split second decisions constantly. I just can't buy the idea that Ryder couldn't...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

Ryder absolutely had other options. I find it bizarre that people keep making this argument. Players in Ryder's situation usually tackle, smother, or just pull out of the contest. Or a hybrid half tackle after realising they were late, ie just brush past the opponent with a bit of physicality...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

I'm a St Kilda fan through and through, but the two incidents were nothing alike. Not even close. Ryder was a day late compared to the Adelaide guy. Sorry. One was two players in a fierce collision at the ball, the other was a late bump after an opponent had already kicked. I wish people...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

This take has been made a few times but it fails the pub test Will Day was kicking the ball. He was running forwards at speed and he entered a kicking motion. Yes, there was an opponent running towards him. From here we have two options: 1. Day was looking to his teammates and trying to kick...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

If you're gonna speculate about conspiracies against St.Kilda, I can suggest better places to go than the tribunal Like, the fixture. St Kilda missed the finals by 1 game and percentage last season after having the toughest fixture in the comp. This year, we again get a tough fixture- harder...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

He might be a barrister but he's wrong that Ryder did anything resembling a "basketball manouvre" and I've explained why very clearly in this thread. The intention of a screen in basketball is never to turn sideways and shoulder the front of your opponent's body.

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

For St Kilda's sake, I would contend that QC should watch more basketball before making half baked basketball arguments at a hearing. The momentum may have been Day's but the momentum in this hearing not going well for Saints fans if that's the best argument he's got.

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

Brilliant post Thanks for showing what I've been saying in previous posts using screenshots. Ryder had other options- tackle, smother, pull out completely. He chose to turn sideways, using his shoulder to bump the incoming player who had already committed to their kicking motion.

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

I've watched it about 30 times. Day may or may not have seen him, but it doesn't change the fact that Ryder turned his body sideways into an incoming player who was facing forwards with his body exposed. The ultimate result (sadly and unforeseeably) was whiplash and a concussion. Ryder had...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

The nature of the collision itself was still Ryder's fault for 2 reasons 1. Day was kicking the ball and couldn't be sure what Ryder's action would be until he was already in the kicking motion. Day could hardly stop before impact. 2. Ryder chose to bump. To hip and shoulder. To turn his body...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

No, I consider Ryder almost our most important player. Certainly top 5. What he did was hip and shoulder a guy who had just kicked the ball. Which unfortunately, and unforeseeably, caused whiplash to the head and a concussion, and a 12 day break. Unfortunate, unforeseeable. But that's what...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

Mate, quit while you're behind. I've been playing basketball for over 25 years, played high level juniors, coached a bit too. Watch plenty of professional basketball. The idea that Ryder's action was acceptable on a basketball court is laughable. It simply wasn't even a basketball play. Full...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

Nonsense If this is basketball Ryder gets an unsportsmanlike foul for that, minimum. Then probably suspension for rough conduct, just like the AFL situation. The basketball rules require 2 USFs OR USF and Technical for an ejection. So it wouldn't be an ejection, but it would be immediate USF...

Paddy Ryder bump on Will Day

Thinking through this Paddy Ryder and Will Day incident. I can understand why they want to outlaw this, to protect the head. It seems to align with increasing understanding around concussion and community sentiment. Ryder could've chosen not to bump. He chose to bump and the final result was a...
