Potential for an earlier start to the season/ representative game etc. in late Feb?

Given there is no longer an official pre-season cup, AFLW at this time of year or really official matches with teams playing a couple of scratch matches it got me thinking whether there is a 'gap' in the calendar for slightly more football. This could be in the form of 1-2 extra matches, a...

AFL announces 4.5billion, 7 year media deal (2025-2031 inclusive)

Fox/ NewsCorp will play so dirty if they don't get the rights/ lose it to another streaming service. Expect minimal coverage on their platforms and even less positive coverage.

    Play Nice 2022 AFL/AFLW Crowds/TV Ratings/Stream thread

Friday night games starting at 7.50 can GAGF and is a bit of a kick in the guts to fans. Unlikely to get home before midnight if you live 10+km from the CBD and need to take PT home. Family friendly my a*s.

AFL announces 4.5billion, 7 year media deal (2025-2031 inclusive)

FTA needs to retain 4 games minimum. Very few sports have benefitted long term taking more/ all of the sport behind a payway. I know the AFL loves a $ but it needs to keep the sport accessible to all as much as possible, which helps drive the grassroots, day to day operation.

Growth of other sports impacting on AFL participation and talent

On the back of seeing the Boomers achieve a bronze medal last night and the massive rise in interest in the NBA in the past 5-10 years I feel basketball is in for a renaissance similar to the early mid 90's. One thing Basketball has on its side is that although the NBA pays big $$$ there are...

Apple Isle Showdown: Tas Govt threatens to end Hawks, North deals if no plan for 19th side

The reason the hawks have been successful down there is that they have put 20+ years into taste, have had a period of success and has one of the best surfaces in the afl. Hobart reminds me of playing in ballarat...s*ithouse dictated by wind

AFL announces 4.5billion, 7 year media deal (2025-2031 inclusive)

Glad the friday night double header is gaining a bit of traction here. Seems a no brainer from me to have 5+ hours of wall to wall footy on a friday night. Not sure on the numbers, but would like the sunday twighlight game (even if its 240 perth time) pis*ed off.

No AFL team for Tasmania, league boss Gillon McLachlan announces

Also feel player retention could be a huge issue.

No AFL team for Tasmania, league boss Gillon McLachlan announces

my thoughts exactly. People forget (or fail to mention) their team has been a basket case for a prolonged period of time. Hell even hawthorn were useless for years

No AFL team for Tasmania, league boss Gillon McLachlan announces

If a team is named Tasmania but based in Hobart will the north of Tasmania get around them, conversely if they were based up North would the south get around 'their' team? Seems logical to place the team in Hobart though due to population.

    Melbourne pulls out of gaming/pokies

Don't mind this at all but does MFC and the other clubs have a suitable plan for getting money into the club other than an AFL grant? Cant take your hand out of one pie and place it in another.

The family club reaps $23million from pokies.

Why should clubs pull them out.... they arent forcing anyone to use them. If clubs get out whats stopping another organisation from just picking up the slack. Completely ludicrous argument.

TBH the saturday afternoon game sucks on tv. 320 broadcast for a game that often started at 145 makes it pretty meaningless to watch.
