I wouldn't read too much into that as far as AFL is concerned. Soccer is a game where the pitch being billiard-table smooth really matters. For AFL, it really just needs to be kind-of flat.
The problem is that the Gabba seems to (according to my layman's eye) have hit the constraints of its available area. When you drive down Stanley Street - four one-way lanes with lots of shops etc on the opposite side to the ground - you pretty much drive under the top levels of the stand.
It's...
As for mine, the glare issue is a problem for TV but
Even the location was ridiculous. Great if you live in Springvale, but if you live in the north or out west, total s**t.
You must be joking. I can actually take a train to the Docklands, it’s in a central location, I’m not 3.5 million years away from the action, I can actually leave the ground within an hour and I don’t get rained on. Bliss
Admittedly that commitment to pay the $1b was made in the weeks leading up to an election, putting the incoming government in a pretty untenable position.
It has quite a bit to do with it. Labour is dirt cheap in many countries as workers have no rights whatsoever, and hence construction time isn't really that big a problem.
However, it's much, much easier to stick a lid on ANZ stadium because there aren't any separate piecemeal stands to it, and...
The answer is "because it ruins one of the things that makes the MCG fantastic".
Don't get me wrong - I've really enjoyed going to the Docklands - but for a big game, nothing beats the MCG in the open air.
Sometimes I think that we - and the AFL - forget about some of the light and dark that...
Yeah, you're right.
Firstly, the stand heights do not match. So you're either going to have to build and support a structure over the top of the G, or you're building up the shorter stands. Doing the first option is just crazy - every time there's a breeze, there would be massive issues with...
The major issue for me if it were to still exist nowadays would be the unnecessary distance to travel. I don't mind driving from Melbourne to Geelong, it's a location that makes sense, and they don't play there Friday nights so I don't have to drive down from work. Driving all the way to...
Yeah, this. Every single sook that everyone ever had about Waverley died in the arse with Etihad
- Being in a rain belt vs having a roof
- No wind shelter due to the single-tier stands vs, I dunno, having a roof
- Being so far from the action due to the ridiculously gentle incline vs three...
Thankfully that's changed now with the redevelopments and the advent of print-it-yourself ticketing - nowadays I can sail straight through the Ablett Terrace gate in about two minutes, and there's a heap of food trucks along the back.
I can see why you hated it back in the day, but of course...
