AFL selected East Perth as 18th team to begin 2011 season
AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou decided to promote East Perth from the WAFL into AFL as the 18th team over GWS and Tasmania. Andrew Demetriou commented, "I strongly felt that it's better to promote a historic team rather than create a franchise to keep up the history of Australian Rules Football along with other 17 great clubs."
East Perth decided to make preparations by signing Dean Cox, a ruckman, from West Coast to help the club with experience as a ruckman itself. In other AFL signing, Dylan Roberton was claimed off Fremantle to help out in the defense or the midfield.
