A PORTRAIT of actor Jack Thompson has been given the nod by packers handling Archibald Prize entries at the NSW Art Gallery.
The portrait by artist Danelle Bergstrom was selected by the packers responsible for receiving and installing the works entered in the prestigious Archibald Prize, which will be decided next Friday.
Head storeman Steve Peters, a veteran of 23 Archibald Prizes, controls 51 per cent of the vote for the Packing Room Prize, and this year, the likeness of the rugged Aussie actor caught his eye.
First awarded in 1991, the 16th Packing Room Prize nets the artist $500 cash and a Myer gift card of the same value.
Thompson today said that when he first saw the work, it moved him to tears.
Among the 41 finalists, politicians have a heavy representation, including portraits of federal Water Resources Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Labor frontbencher Peter Garrett.
Why not call it the Steve Peters pick, get rid of now.
