Alex Karras, a defensive leader on the Detroit Lions in the 1960s, has passed away at age 77. He was suffering from dementia and had joined the suit against the NFL by former players, but also had heart problems and had recently suffered kidney failure.
Karras won more fame after his NFL career, appearing on Monday Night Football for a short time, before going into movies and television. He was perhaps best known for his roles in the movie "Blazing Saddles" and the television series "Webster."
I remember Karras from the george Plimpton book and movie "Paper Lion." Karras was a key figure on the Lions when Plimpton did his bit with the Lions. Presumably, the Lions will have a patch for Karras.
