Dons lose top spot to surging Sharks

The Sharks have made their stamp on the game with a victory over ladder leaders Essendon in a 7-goal win at Etihad Stadium. There were no travel worries, as the Sharks lead all game in their comprehensive 18.10 (118) to 10.18 (78) win.

The home team was disappointing, especially infront of goal, kicking 4.15 at one stage during the game. The Sharks took their opportunities, being 12.7 after their first 19 scoring shots in comparison.

Matt Suckling was the standout, in a game he said felt like his best of his career. Coming off the back of a month out of the game thanks to a hand injury, the former Hawk collected 31 touches including 18 kicks, 11 inside 50's and a bullet of a goal. Of his 18 kicks, 15 were effective, and of the other 3, two were behinds by inches.

Brendan Goddard and Dayne Beams also backed up great starts to the season with quality performances on the ball, while Chris Judd was held to just six touches at half-time by Heath Hocking. Judd still ended up with 21 disposals and 8 clearances, but his man got the points. Brent Stanton also beat Brad Ebert, who was later subbed, having 21 kicks and 4 handballs.

Hamish Hartlett backed up a terrific opening month with another 19 kicks and 9 handballs off half-back, while Jackson Trengove helped his way to 19 touches and allowing Angus Monfries to score only three behinds.

The biggest story however was Daniel Menzel's hard work. Coming back from consecutive knee injuries, Menzel kicked three goals in the opening half, and had three more goal assists. He started sub last week and could only manage 3 touches, but was fantastic in his first full game.

The Sharks will take on the GWS Giants in Hobart next week, a game that may see them jump to the top of the ladder.
