*Local Footy Hero*
Few in our community could boast of nearly 80 years’ service to their local football club. Yet that’s exactly why Monbulk’s John Mitchell is this week’s Bendigo Bank Local Footy Hero. John began with the Hawks when he was just 16 and, after playing in the 1935 premiership team, has served the club with distinction in almost every role, including coach, president, committeeman, junior coach, fund-raiser, you name it, John has done it at Monbulk. And despite his 95th birthday coming up next month, John still gets to the footy nearly every week to spur on his team.
Congratulations on a wonderful contribution to local football John.
John receives a $250 account voucher from the Bendigo Bank, proud supporters of community football.
*Umpires’ Appreciation Day*
We check out if our umpires really do feel appreciated.
*Taking the big step*
St. Mary’s in the Northern Football League have taken the big step from a junior club to senior ranks this season. We catch up with the Kookaburras’ faithfull to check on their progress.
*Linger longer at Mypolonga*
Mypolonga is a South Australian country team just over the border in the Murray River League. Despite the fact there are only seven teams in the league, the recent Mypolonga-Jervois clash proved yet again how local football can bring the community together.
*Two draws in one day*
It’s not often that both the reserves and seniors play out a draw at the same venue on the same day. But that’s what happened at Montmorency last Saturday when the Magpies drew with West Preston Lakeside in both games.
We caught all the action of the thrilling final moments of the senior game and the visiting coach’s reaction.
*The big Monk still firing*
Former Collingwood champion Damien Monkhorst is still weaving his football magic in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League, where he coaches Woori Yallock. The 40-year-old ruckman wants to retire but they won’t let him! Damien spoke frankly to us after the Tigers’
narrow win over Monbulk in our highlights match-of-the-day.
* John Bennett and Damien Cody speak about Heathertons promotion back into SFL Division 1
Round-up from all the Leagues
Scores and ladders for your local football competition
(9 Leagues and 22 Divisions of Football)
And lots lots more on C31 Friday night at 7pm until 8.30pm and the 30 minute show at 9am Saturday morning.
This Saturday THE LOCAL FOOTY SHOW will be at the SFL at Mordialloc Vs Tooronga Malvern
