Other Ray Rice - Woman Basher

It's very easy to think we know best when we aren't involved and have no responsibility or any connection to the situation.
Just don't think it is appropriate to belittle her when she is the victim. We're better than that here.

Maybe you're doing the belittling by calling her the victim. Perhaps she doesn't want to be seen that way.

Perhaps she is just a lover that got into a fight that wasn't really physically fair. She has forgiven her partner but that doesn't mean he should be allowed to be a sports star and role model.

I think the saddest thing about this is that this very post is probably a result of domestic violence. This is the exact stereotype of a 'battered woman' - blaming everyone except the perpetrator (including the media and herself), apologising for her partners indiscretion, and defending what he did to her.

Completely agree.

Perhaps even sadder is reading the response to this statement both here and elsewhere on the internet... people saying how stupid she must be or worse, saying that it was her fault because she spat on him... it's not her fault that Ray Rice is a piece of s**t, and I hope that people will one day have a better understanding of DV to know that a statement like this is likely the result of that DV.

(everything in this post assumes that Jenay Rice actually wrote that, which I guess we don't even know for certain.)

My original post was pretty much plagiarised from what I wrote over at Deadspin.

Great that (as of just now) 657 people agreed with me, but sad that nearly 30 others chose to come back at me, some of them still claiming provocation as a justification for RR doing what he did.

 Comments are getting a bit out of hand. She is not stupid, she is not a bitch and for what it is worth i truly believe Rice is embarrassed and ashamed of his actions.

Nah, think he's just pissed it got caught on camera. Guaranteed it's not the first time he's done something like that.

i think the worst reflection of rice from the footage is the complete lack of emotion and care he showed after he did it. even if it was a one off case where hes had an instinctive physical reaction to someone coming at him (still not excusable, but better than being a systematic domestic abuser), the reaction of just standing there and then dragging her around paints the picture of a cold mother*er.

One of the better things about the NFL is getting to watch American ads. I've been humming "Nationwide is on your side" for a lot of the day and I hazard a guess I'll be doing it for a while longer :D

my favourite thing about american ads are all the pharmaceutical ones (and there are a lot) where the disclaimer about all the bad s**t it can do to you (side effects may include death! these anti depressants may make you more depressed and give you suicidal thoughts! if your erection lasts longer than 12 hours see a doctor!) is longer than the positive part of the ad.

My favourite ad from last year was the Bud Light Ramsey commercial (the Patriots fan). "AWWW COME OOOOOONNNNNNN!!!!!!!! THAT'S A HOOOOOOOLD!!!!"

I know a few people are genuinely perplexed by the girlfriend becoming the wife and as a woman I don't always get it either. If you are on twitter have a search around #whyIstayed. Its sobering reading and might answer a few questions.

Oh and Goodell cant possibly survive this. Id love to know how much dirty laundry he's had to cover up over his tenure though!

Breaking news on nfl.Com....

Law enforcement official says rice video was sent to the nfl prior to two game suspension.

This is the final nail in the coffin for Goodell I believe.

As GG stated previously the NFL is more about duck and cover than seriously confronting issues. The fact that the NFL actually had the footage AND still only handed out a two game suspension is almost criminal.

Goodell won't go.

People need to learn just exactly how damage control PR works. Even if the owners all got together today and decided that they had definitive proof that Goodell was either negligent or wilfully ignorant, they won't fire him. They'll put in place a discreet plan that lets Goodell walk in a few months time for some other reason. Maybe Goodells health takes an unexpected turn, maybe he suddenly wants to spend more time with his family.

The point is, a narrative will be created that 'protects the integrity of the shield' in the face of overwhelming negative publicity.

This is how the real world operates.

ESPN are now reporting the NFL have had the inside Elevator video since April. The AP got this from Law enforcement involved.
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11503851/ray-rice-videotape-sent-nfl-executive-april

Rice and Palmer -- now Janay Rice -- can be heard shouting obscenities at each other, and she appears to spit at Rice right before he throws a brutal punch. "Outside The Lines" reported Wednesday that Rice spat at Palmer twice, including once in the elevator just before the punch. After she collapses, he drags her out of the elevator and is met by some hotel staff. One of them can be heard saying, "She's drunk, right?" and then, "No cops."

Also apparently in a podcast from July Chris Mortonson described the video in detail including how the punch was thrown and Janya hitting the rail. Which he said a NFL executive told him.

An unscientific poll on ESPN has asked the question as to whether Goodell should resign or be fired in the wake of the Ray Rice situation. From 155K votes, 64% are in favour of Goodell getting out of the way, but I think Chadwiko is spot on the money - Goodell will weather this storm and then maybe some time in the future (around the Superbowl, perhaps?) he'll announce that he's stepping down to take on a new challenge or spend more time with his family, etc.

This was the article;

"
A law enforcement official says he sent a video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee to an NFL executive five months ago, while Commissioner Roger Goodell has insisted the league didn't see the violent images until this week.
The person played The Associated Press a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirming the video arrived. A female voice expresses thanks and says: "You're right. It's terrible."
The law enforcement official, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, says he had no further communication with any NFL employee and can't confirm anyone watched the video. The person said he was unauthorized to release the video but shared it unsolicited, because he wanted the NFL to have it before deciding on Rice's punishment.
The NFL has repeatedly said it asked for but could not obtain the video of the Baltimore Ravens running back hitting Janay Palmer -- who is now his wife -- at an Atlantic City casino in February.
The league says it has no record of the video, and no one in the league office had seen it until it was released by TMZ Monday. When asked about the voicemail Wednesday, NFL officials repeated their assertion that no league official had seen the video before Monday."

Expect an NFL official or two ( not Goodall) to be sacked after the vision is found somewhere like Wichita.

NFL has appointed an independent investigation into how the NFL office handled the incident.

The owners overlooking the case are Rooney and Mara.

Mara, the same guy who was essentially responsible for the Cowboys and Redskins being handed salary cap penalties a couple of years back, in text-book collusion.

Sooooo I have 0 faith that the investigation will actually lead to anything worth a damn.

so the NFL get the 2 owners that are the most vocal supporters of Gordell to over look the case. Yeah this will be fair. they will just look for another way to sweep it under the rug or make low level employees as scapegoats

Just play the Benny Hill music....

Goodall has some resemblance to a young Benny Hill....

They're obviously hoping that two of the "biggest" names who have a long tradition with the NFL will somehow engender trust in the process (especially the Rooney name given that Rooney Snr was a diplomat up until recently)
