Rank Geelong's worst trade selections

Now that HMac has today officially announced his retirement, Geelong's decision to recruit him could go down as one of the worst trade selections, not because he lacked talent, but because he was severely hampered by injury at North and Geelong. This got me thinking - where would the HMac selection rank amongst other questionable selections?

No doubt the list of Geelong's successful trades far outweighs the questionable selections.

Here are some of the dubious selections, in no particular order:

Justin Murphy - Played 18 games for Geelong in 2001 after more than 90 with Richmond and Carlton. Polled well in the B&F but he never connected with the club.
Mitchell White - A member of WCE team of decade, White played 23 games in 3 seasons, including only 7 in the last 2 seasons
Gary Sidebottom - ex Saints captain played 7 games for Geelong, famously missed the bus for the Prelim final and was eventually sacked by the club
Marcus Drum - was on Geelong's list for 18 months, played 0 games before retiring due to injury
Brian Peake - played 66 games for Geelong between 1981 & 1984. Made captain in 1982 after 13 games. We rarely if ever saw the best of Peake who earned the nickname, "Pasties".
David Loats - fringe Hawthorn player who played 1 game for Geelong in 2004
Brett Bailey - I don't even remember this guy. He played 1 game in 1990 after 80 games with Melbourne

Don't know what they cost us but Brett Spinks and Jason Mooney were a touch underwhelming
I thought Spinks too but then saw he played 17 or 19 games in the one season. We must have been real crap that year!

still doesnt change the fact that letting him go was the worst list decision the club has made. cost us a couple of flags. maybe more.

Blame Billy Goggin! He was Football Director and refused to pay the little extra that Williams wanted to stay. A shocker

mumford has to be a big one given our ruck woes. Duncan is nice chocolates but Mumford would of got us home in 2013.

Sydney paid overs for him from memory and our salary cap at the time wouldn't allow us to match anything near what he got offered.
Same goes for Moloney

Brent Grgic we traded pick 55
Might not seem like much but MFC gained Brad Miller.
We lost that trade and miller wasn't anything special

Grgic would definitely rank as the worst player I have ever seen wearing a Geelong jumper - I was absolutely convinced he was on the cough medicine.
Not without skill, but lacked heart.

It's pointless to rank them without considering what was given up in return.

Loats was a three-way trade with David Clarke (Carlton) and Simon Beaumont (Hawthorn).
David Haynes cost pick 20, which ultimately became Sam Butler (West Coast), a premiership player that is still playing for the Eagles.
Marcus Drum cost pick 49, which ultimately became Dylan Roberton (Fremantle/St Kilda), a handy half back type, who probably never would have found a regular spot.
Justin Murphy cost pick 11, which ultimately became Trent Sporn (Carlton). Shaun Burgoyne and Ash McGrath, a couple of players with some famous moments against the Cats in their long careers, were drafted immediately after.
Mitchell White cost picks 27 (which became Ted Richards), 45 and 57
Ronnie Burns was traded for Ben Finnin (who never played an AFL game).
Hamish McIntosh cost pick 38, which ultimately became Jackson Ramsay. Hasn't exactly rubbed our noses in it to date, though he does look like he might be a player.
Brett Spinks cost pick 13, which ultimately became Callum Chambers, with not much else of note being drafted immediately after him either.
Brent Grgic cost pick 55, which ultimately became Brad Miller
Brett Bailey was taken in the preseason draft.
I think Brian Peake was the equivalent of a free agent and didn't cost us anything, in terms of players.

All up, I'd say Murphy, Haynes, Grgic, White, in that order.

My favourite quotes:
"Worst player we have ever recruited. Makes Peter Street look like a champion in comparison."

"career highlight:kicked a miracle goal from the boundary as hawthorn moved to a 51 point lead against richmond. alas, when everitt went off, his rucking was a major factor in richmond storming back to win"

"He played one game fomr Geelong this year, 0 kicks, 0 marks, 0 handballs"
