Pardon the intrusion, just wondering if anyone has some insight as to why Doch is playing predominantly as the extra Mid starting fwd/wing of late, with only spurts in defence?

He's an elite rebounding defender, one of the best in the comp, and from the outside it looks like he's being wasted in his current role.

He was. Not anymore.

He played mid late last year when we had no Kennedy / Hewett / Walsh and did very well. He’s one of only a few on our list with a bit of burst off the mark. I think Voss was hoping he’d be that point of difference for us in the middle but it’s not really worked. Needed to go back in the third tonight to help shore us up. But Vossy be stubborn, as I’m sure you’re aware.

I've tried to be patient and measured with my assessment of Voss but tonight broke me.

B Scott made one simple and obvious move at half time – shifting Merrett forward to break the Curnow tag and throwing Stringer in the middle. Ed then proceeds to look all at sea wondering whether to try and win his own ball or clamp down on the much bigger Stringer. While we're scratching our heads the Dons go on a clearance rampage (led by Stringer) and bang on a stack of quick goals to put the game to bed. Ed then gets shifted out of the midfield rotation and onto a forward flank, where he is even more ineffective. Instead of taking the Merrett move forward as a win and trying to capitalise in the middle, we do nothing and let our clearance specialist sit cold on the pine.

Also took way too long to move a clearly out of his depth Young off Wright. Plus got played before the game had even started with the Dons bringing in their second ruck as a late change to exploit SOS. The Pies did the exact same with Cameron, exact same result. Fool me once etc. etc.

Voss needs a reminder that the word coach is a verb as well as a noun.
On field leadership!!!

Crazy Vossy hath returned.

I feel like there was no backup plan made for "What if Merret plays" forward. Seems like we were scrambling for this positional change.

Only brightside is Kemp/Charlie/Cerra are the only players on the list that hasn't gone backwards.

Mostly everyone else either has dipped in form or lost a lot of confidence.

Not the only one. Docherty should be played back and controlling the offensive moves from there.
Kennedy not being played midfield, Kemp not being played wing, others shouldn’t be playing at all. It’s a mess......embarrassing actually.

I can't advocate sacking Voss atm but I CAN advocate for an almighty clear out of players at season's end. It's becoming more obvious by the week that a lot of our guys have no heart, grit or guts.

The later will happen and the former still might.

No matter what happens to Voss, the players won’t be absolved this time.

Imagine being dismantled by this one simple move. Honestly, it’s beyond a joke now.

But JAB it was pretty impressive how well Scott has coached them (so quickly)

I've watched some pretty bad football over the years from this Club - but that 10 minute period in the third quarter is probably the worst I've seen all things considered...

I will say one big negative mate- I don't rate Cripps or Docherty as players particularly useful to Carlton's future. Cripps allowing himself to be made irrelevant in clearances by whoever teh opposition coach puts on him that is just BS. I'm a seller not a buyer of that stuff...as for Ed Curnow copping a pasting in here- whilst Docherty gets a free pass whilst busy butchering everything he has gone near - since oh about this time last year? not a buyer of that either if your leaders arent even doing their job - they aren't leading anyone to anywhere...

Cripps can pull his head in or can go back to Perth take his mate Fisher with him and tell the WC or Freo coaches what they should be doing...

It cost Collingwood some salary cap co-payments to clear the decks - look at them now- even deGoey has pulled his head in...

I've got my fingers crossed Cook has his ideas about what needs to be fixed amongst the players - it will take some pain and we lose some fan favourites who have delivered jackS**t - but that's the hand they have dealt the Club now.

I dont know if Voss is a good enough coach- I but I do know we are carrying some players and paying them - who aren't.

Why are we getting rid of players or doing a mini rebuild, remember it’s all on Voss

No one is saying it’s only Voss. It’s a given we will be making major playing list changes.

Nobody in their right mind would say get rid of Voss and don’t do another changes and it will all be fine.

He can be A problem, but he definitely isn’t the only problem.

i have been thinking this for a few weeks. I honestly think we are 17th best side, and that only because of the dire position WCE are in because of injury. At least they have that excuse.

It hurts to watch the Kangas bloom and the dawks reveal so many good young players while we are in the doldrums. Our young players just aren't up to it it seems... where are our breakthrough young'uns?

We are clearly the 2nd worst side in the competition at the moment.

We haven’t scored more than 59 in our last 5 matches.

Like seriously wtf is going on? How does this happen? We are playing the same bloody game over and over and over and over again.

We are consistent and you know what you’re going to get, which seems to be what we have aspired to. We keep following the same process for the same result.

The rest of the year is going to be very interesting, this run of losing 8 of our last 9 and looking like it is going to continue to get worse, is going to end a lot of careers, at least at Carlton and many from the afl entirely, both on and off field.

Game plan certainly changed.

Unfortunately it just meant we found a new way to disappoint. To still kick a measly score. To still struggle to stop a run from the opposition.

Essendon played 1 quarter of footy and it was still well and truly enough to put them out of reach for us.

It didn’t change, it was a repeat of the season so far.

We score 40-50 points a game with the most dysfunctional forward line possibly ever.

Watched the game on replay after missing it to see the news Transformers movie.

I can’t say how to fix this, nor can I even say when it’ll look better, but, I have one idea that was mentioned previously by I think Forty?

Cerra has to be our captain going forward for the next phase of this once proud club. That would be my starting point.

Tough night. Not much you can say. Watching the players is difficult - totally devoid of confidence, conviction and fun.

Our game plan is 12 months behind everyone else (and we can’t convert even when it does click) and our list has several gaping holes courtesy of past failures - but the real clincher is that the players are on the precipice of mental oblivion.

We must salvage something from this season and I am reluctantly becoming convinced it’s going to require a significant reset. We need to get the players’ zest back. They aren’t perfect but they can be very good. We can talk about improving the list at the end of the year but realistically, we can make major strides with what we have by evolving our approach and saving them. We HAVE to. We have to continue dialling up the experimentation of game plan and personnel.

Will leave the Voss call to the powers-that-be. The changes to the game plan were evident tonight and I was happy to see us taking the game on more, even if it meant we got burned badly when it wasn’t working. Don’t bemoan safe conservative play (which has been effective at keeping us in games but robbed us of any explosive scoreboard potential) then also do the same when we try the opposite and it doesn’t lead to immediate results. It’s always a trade off. The more we do it, the better we will get and the more effectively we will balance our existing defensive discipline with the required ball movement and attacking flair. Not only that, but there is never a silver bullet solution when multiple areas of the club are failing and good clubs simply don’t hire and fire coaches every 1-2 years.

Having said that, while I acknowledge some steps forward at times tonight (scoreline aside) - we need to keep a very close eye on the playing group. Coaches can lose players and rightly or wrongly, unless you are 110% certain your coach is your guy, there is not a lot you can do but move on and avoid deeper issues forming in the chaos. We need to see some major progress to demonstrate the coaching staff’s ability to motivate and strategise at an elite level very soon.
