Jordan Roughead (Western Bulldogs) — 37 from 15 games (2.5)
He is in the same category as Zac Dawson neither care about the ball there only objective is to stop the opposition.
That's great but give me an attacking defender everyday that stops goals and also creates goals at the other end.

This list shows how good Carlton's Jamison is. Lonergan for example has a top team restricting the fluency with which the ball comes in, and fellow defenders like Harry Taylor and Rivers to help hold the defense together. Jammo has a midfield that can leak like a sieve and a guy in Sam Rowe, who often has his hands too full with is own man.

Just a question, Carlton's most likely (though unlikely) would be Gibbs and Yarran. While neither will make the AA team, where do reckon they sit this year? Would they make a seconds team, or a thirds?

Gibbs a certainty for the squad. Has been massive and is even a sneaky chance at a spot on the bench. Yarran has fluctuated too much for mine and will miss the squad for defenders like Jonas, Hibberd and Burgoyne.

Few thoughts...as we go into "name player pulls out a big game and suddenly makes AA" week.
Gibbs will make the squad, and is now even a chance for the team. Rockliff could break both legs and still walk into this years team.
Despite both being young(ish), i think many like me were surprised that both Parker and Heppell were consistent and actually got better as the season progressed. I think they have both grabbed an AA slot somewhere and not being "name players" they may both come off the bench.
Pendlebury and Harvey have both drifted a bit lately. Pendlebury has the season credits in the bank and has earnt selection already, but Harvey is now a bit borderline. They'll try to pick at least 1 North guy though, so i reckon they'll pick him and likely at HFF opposite Gray who waltzes in. Boak and Selwood have drifted in and out of contention...not big seasons that scream AA selection, but both are captains which helps and neither would be a shock.
Ablett will be named in the squad which is still a great accolade, but it would be a stretch for them to name him AA. 50/50 but i'd leave him out.
Geelong fans will hate me saying it but cant see any true standouts that demand AA selection this year. Finishing 3rd i reckon they will elevate at least 1 maybe 2 borderline guys. Hawkins has not had an outstanding AA quality KPF type season for my money, and more a stay at home type FF. Just because you kick 0.3 or whateva more goals a game than another guy shouldnt mean you can suddenly get named out of position at say CHF...but they might coz they now regularly go off the Coleman race rather than create a relatively balanced team to win you a game. Franklin and Roughead ahead of him so why pick him when u could add a proper CHF ? Taylor hasnt exactly been a standout either...good second half of season but so have other KPF's. Not for me but they luv him nearly as much as Enright.
Despite missing maybe 4 games, i think Beams has earnt selection...Ward and Priddis still a huge chance to grab a bench spot and i doubt many would view either as silly selections.
Top 2 teams both look like having minimum 3 definites. Seems about right/fair. Franklin/Breust/Roughead/Malceski/Kennedy/Lewis are the ones that had the most obvious AA standard seasons....but can easily be a few extra's...8 or 9ish from the top 2 would be nothing bizarre.
The two that would add the most flexibility and strengthen this years team would be Roughead and Riewoldt. Assuming Franklin walks in at FF, i still maintain that Roughead picked in a pocket (and having the mobile marking target at CHF) is a much much stronger team...both are worthy and it means you now only need to pick one ruck from Jacobs and Sandilands. Both Roughead and Riewoldt have been known to help out in the ruck, and Roughead could be considered a specialist. You dont need three regular FF's that usually play close to goal jammed into the AA forward line...so why try to stuff in a Hawkins type ? Coleman race should only be a rough guide. Obvious to all that Riewoldt would be murdering this season if he was getting the same opportunities, and it shouldnt be only about a few goals after 23 rnds. Either that or pick Ballantyne in the other pkt opposite Breust then the Franklin/Roughead as FF/CHF combo.
Sandilands has been very good and easily makes the squad...but neither he nor Jacobs have been mind blowingly good enough to require two specialist rucks this year. Thats the massive benefit of picking Roughead in a pocket who is one of my first named. Neither ruck has been hitting the scoreboard much either...why pick 2 this year ? Would only be coz u cant split them. So i'd toss a coin, ignore the result, and pick Jacobs anyway...and leave Sandilands out of the 22.

Gibbs should be in the 40 not sure he makes the side though.
For me Gibbs & Rowe were your shining lights this year.

Sounds all fairly reasonable.

FWIW, had a couple of quiet weeks by his standard in rounds 17-19 but his last two games (r20 vs WC & r22 vs GWS) were very good.

Why is Nick Smith being named? Taggers have to play on far better players (plus have to do more in attack) and not a single tagger has been named in the thread.

Structure. He's actually a defender, taggers are overwhelmingly midfielders. We've gotten past the idea of throwing mids in every position available including the back pocket.
