Reid last night said small forward Matthew Bode was unlikely to play again this season because his knee injury, which has restricted him to just one game this year – against the Bulldogs in round two – was healing slowly.

"We think we're better off getting him right for next year," Reid said.
We all know how important Bode is to this team, but can we carry him for another season considering his inability to get on the park?

I think this quote confirms that Bode will be a Crow in 2008. Let’s hope he can get his body right because when fit there aren’t too many more important players to our team. :thumbsu:

By the sounds of it he will be retained. I am a bit 50/50 on him. You can find good forward crumbers without too much trouble and can be a good place for a younger player to learn the game. If it was me given the state and age of the list I would move him on reluctantly.

agreed drummond :thumbsu:

Luckily for you he isn't a norwood player otherwise i'm sure the fact that he has tips in his hair means we should delist him

If its so easy why have we struggled most of the year to find a replacement?

Unless they're dudding Bode, it certainly sounds like he will be retained - and rightly so IMO.

We have really missed his forward line pressure this year.

If he is retained it would be his last crack IMO. He wouldn't want to have another virtually non-year, or the club will have no choice.

Sounds like it!

I have questioned whether or not its time to question whether or not its worth it having him on the list due to his injuries. His ability speaks for itself but injuries are an issue.

From the sounds of it, I think he will be retained and I am not against it. Fit Bode walks into our best side. Bode, Welsh and Gill in the same forward line and the ball won't be coming out of there :D

I read that he was the best forward 50 tackler in the whole AFL in 2006. I knew he had a fair few tackles but I didn't know he was the number #1 in the AFL for tackles in the forward line.

If Bode is so vital, or at least his 'type' of player, i don't see why we Campbell has not been given a crack up there. Has all the attributes IMO.

Given Porps, Burton and Welsh up there, gonna be an interesting structure with Bode next year. No real room for a resting midfielder but i guess they can go to the bench, with both Bode (Campbell!) and Porps with cameo's thru the middle to mix it up a bit.

HF: Burton Gill Porplyzia
FF: Bode Hentschel Welsh

That's quite a strong forward line. Throw someone like Sellar into the mix randomly and it's very nice indeed.

Great defensive pressure, hard nut, tough tackling, reasonable goal sense, traditional roving ability, even a left foot...CAMPBELL!!

He does have the attributes. I'll pay that.

Campbell is not a forward. While he’s a terrific tackler, does all the 1%’s and applies good defensive pressure, he’s not a forward. He’s spent a bit of time up there this season probably because he missed basically the entire pre-season so he’s not fit enough to play in the midfield for an entire game. Don’t make Bryce into something he’s not; he's clearly at his best in the midfield getting the hard ball and supplying the forwards.

As for Bode that’s a good point you brought up about stints in the midfield. He had nearly 450 possessions in 2002 and averaged almost 18 touches a game so he’s definitely more than just a goal sneak, but that’s probably where he’s most needed these days.

He may need to develop the forward side of his game if he wants a spot, though i'd be grooming him to take over Shirley also.

I recall you singing his forwardline prowess for Norwood while resting up there? He certainly has contributed on the scoreboard regularly.

Yes for Norwood he is their best midfielder, but for the Crows he may need to be a small forward

I partially agree with this. Obviously Drummond is the guy who sees Campbo week in week out so I know I wouldn't know his game as well as Drummond does, but I do think he is worth trying in forward cameos throughout 2008. Midfielder first, forward second yes but there is enough to like in the second string of his game to play him up there between midfield rotations imo. Plus fisty is right, he may well have to play in that position to get a regular gig with the Crows (next year at least).

Constantly I see people include him in their shortlist of players to get the cut at the end of the season; he will definitely not be delisted, Craigy will be wanting to keep the younger guys around to rebuild our structure (maybe Hinge to be cut at a stretch but no one else aside from rookies). I am expecting this year to finally spell the end for a couple of our dead wood players.

I would normally have said that one full season out of 3 was insufficient given Bodes record to hold his spot on the list.

That said ...weak draft ......AFC need small - medium midfielders ....so IMO he gets one last shot .....but he will know it's last chance saloon ;)

So whats Bernie Vinces role as a small crumber?
Signed a two year contact according to 7 news tonite:confused:

I reckon Bode has been urinated on by a Leprechaun...no one can be that unlucky in terms of injury ridden seasons

Bernie is a long term midfield prospect, has beautiful hands like Porps so a clearance role is on the cards. Will be putting in the pre season in 2008 to begin that transition.

Interesting rumour: Port Adelaide apparently was trying to lure Vince to Alberton, along with Darren Pfeiffer.

Hopefully he can get on the park next year. Hes vital to our forward line. Noone else can play the role he does.

Vince is a long strider not really a crumber.

As great a supporter as Iam of his he still has a lot of areas to improve on ......he is a midfielder that's for sure , but IMO he has to strengthen his body and play more inside than at present.

He reads the game well, has a great footy brain but is more outside AP than I would like ........and he does appear to be of reasonable pace BUT one paced, which is a touch concerning.
