Re: Justin Sherman

I can't see it personally.

He's number one on my 'must-trade' list. Very ordinary when getting a go and by now should be doing better than 30 points a game in champion data.

Come on, Tim. You had the screen out for JMac before he'd even played a senior game this year. Why would you want to actively go out of your way to write off a 20yo kid who only 12 months ago was good enough to come 2nd in his club B&F in his second season, while all around him were collapsing?

Adcock came third in the B&F in 2005 but couldn't crack the top 20 in 2006. Did you have a 'For Sale' sign on him this time last year?

Plenty of kids go through flat spots or flat years. There were good arguments for trading CJ 8 or 9 years ago. Tossing out the baby each time we hit one is an financially and emotionally expensive exercise.

Re: Justin Sherman

I hope Leigh loses the idea of playing him as a tagger next year and just lets him chase the ball.

I reckon you have to earn the right to play that sort of role. I hope that Shermo has such a quality pre-season that Lethal has no choice but to give him a free rein.

Re: Justin Sherman

i just want to ask something. I have seen on some trading threads about sherman wanting 'out'. I really have my doubts but all you are getting on those boards are rumours and conspiracys about certain players and obsessed fans who want him. From a lions supporter - does anyone know what is going on becaus i do not.

I can say without exaggeration that 99 percent of trade scenarios floated on BigFooty are complete bullshit.

Needs A New Team: Justin Sherman
September 5th 2007 00:30
Brisbane

Justin Sherman: His role in the forward line has been taken by Robert Copeland. Proud will also be a player who could be used in a similar way, so Sherman might struggle to get back into the team and repeat the success he had in season 2006. With a draft pick or two, and maybe Schmidt winning a spot, the Lions may not give Sherman many more chances.
Plenty of Victorian sides would be willing to trade for him, provide him with a consistent role and give him another chance to become a star in the AFL. The Saints, Tigers, Blues and Kangaroos might be teams that could use Sherman.

Roos said the Swans also had an interest in Geelong's out-of-contract midfielder Kane Tenace and Brisbane defender/midfielder Justin Sherman, who is contracted to the Lions for another two years.

BRISBANE has declared out-of-sorts youngster Justin Sherman off limits.
Sherman placed third in the 2006 Merrett-Murray medal but struggled to reproduce that form this season and spent a large chunk of the year in the reserves.
Lions CEO Michael Bowers said the club was aware Sherman had attracted interest from several lowly placed Melbourne clubs but stressed the 20-year-old Tasmanian was a required player.
"At this stage he is a contracted player and we are looking forward to his 2008 season," Bowers said.

It appears that the powers-to-be agree with me and want to move him on.

I was Jed's biggest fan over the past couple of years along with Drummo and Patfull and I'm hardly the person getting stuck into every young player however Sherman did go backwards this year after such a promising first year and sometimes hard decisions must be made.

Justin Sherman, who is contracted to Brisbane for another two years, will not be traded after interest from several clubs.

Re: Justin Sherman

You beauty, I am as happy as the Carlton supporters were yesterday to hear Sherman will be with us for another two years Grim:D

You have put a smile on my face:D

Re: Justin Sherman

And you call yourself Australia's greatest football fan!

I didn't call myself that (I'm sure you're joking so I'm not taking the comment seriously :p) but I suppose I finished in the top 8! :D

Shermo does have to step up though, I'm not hiding from my comments. If he's got it in him, he'll work hard in the pre-season and hopefully kick arse next year.

Re: Justin Sherman

End of Season Player Review

As the reigning runner up in the B&F and having gone to Ireland for an International Rules Series, there were high expectations for Sherman in 2007. With his early success and his youthful exuberance he had become a figure head for the new breed of young Lions. But alas it turned out to be a year to forget.

After showing a handy knack of finding the goals late last year, Sherman started out in the forward line. He was reasonable and kicked a couple of goals in the NAB Cup and early in the season. But he had a few quiet games and was soon moved back to play as a defensive midfielder. He continued to struggle, with his opponents getting plenty of the ball and Sherman not offering much in attack.

In round 8 he was dropped for a game to jolt him into action, but it didn’t work and his form if anything continued to get worse. In round 14 he was dropped again, and then was sidelined for a month with a foot infection. When he returned for Suncoast, he was a little inconsistent, but at least there were some good patches to help him rebuild his confidence.

In round 20, with the Lions suffering a long injury list, they took a punt on Sherman. He tried hard but the magic wasn’t there. He made too many errors, seemingly from trying too hard not to make them. His confidence was at an all time low, and he was dropped again for the final game against Geelong.

It was about as bad as year as you could possibly imagine. But the thing in Sherman’s favour is that he and the coaching staff know that he does have the ability. I would imagine the summer will be about getting back to basics and focusing on working hard, and letting the confidence grow from there.

Lion regaining effervescence after tough 2007
7:50 AM Thu 15 November, 2007
By Simon White
for lions.com.au

FRESH from what he admits was a character-building 2007 campaign, Brisbane Lions midfielder Justin Sherman is determined to bounce back to his effervescent best in 2008.
Sherman enjoyed a dream first two years at the Gabba, playing 19 games and earning a Rising Star nomination in his debut season of 2005 and then playing every game and finishing second behind Simon Black in the club champion award in 2006.
But his young career hit its first significant speed bumps this year, when he was squeezed out of the side and then suffered a foot infection.
"My philosophy on footy is that you never stop learning – and I really learned a lot out of last year," Sherman told lions.com.au.
"I had a few setbacks and I didn’t really know how to react when I got dropped.
"There were times during the year when I wasn’t really myself personally – I’ve got a pretty bubbly personality but it wasn’t showing.
"This year I’m going to be better prepared for the start of the season and I’m really grateful for the support everyone has given me.
"Lots have people have shown confidence in me that I can come back bigger and better and it’s been really good to have someone like [coach] Leigh [Matthews] giving you that kind of direction.”
Sherman had an interrupted pre-season last year after representing Australia in the International Rules series in Ireland.
In hindsight he says he might have been better staying home and focussing on his preparation for 2007.
The flip side, however is that would have ruled him out of a rare opportunity to play for his country.
"Representing Australia is a pretty special thing and, as far as individual achievements go, that’s one you don’t really want to let slip," Sherman said.
"So much passion goes into playing for your country - it’s the pinnacle of sport and I did take a lot out of it.
"But looking back it probably did disrupt my pre-season a bit. I had three or four weeks off and I was a bit behind the eight-ball and playing catch-up with my fitness from the start.
"I still got myself in pretty good shape but deep down it kind of niggles at the back of my mind that those three or four weeks might have cost me."
This off-season Sherman has stayed closer to home – quite literally – and has purchased a new residence in Brisbane.
His summer workload is aimed at building the endurance needed to spend long periods in the Lions’ midfield.
"I’m mainly working on endurance at the moment – just trying to get myself as fit as possible," he said.
"I’m feeling really good and my skinfolds are pretty much where they need to be.
"You can’t play in the midfield unless you can run really well and even just improving a couple of per cent can help with that."
While Sherman is striving to become an elite runner, the Lions are charting a return to being one of the competition’s elite.
Having largely watched on as the Lion roared back into finals contention in the second half of last season, he 20-year-old can’t wait to be a part of it.
"It’s a really exciting time for us, especially having been there from the start of this re-generation, if you want to call it that, of players," Sherman said.
"A lot of us younger guys came to the club and played our first games around the same time.
"It’s a new year with new challenges and I just feel so lucky to be a part of it all."

Lion death fears
16 December 2007 Sunday Herald Sun
Damien Stannard

HE could have lost a leg or even his life - no wonder Justin Sherman considers himself lucky.

sherman14mo1.jpg
Lucky: Justin Sherman.
This year, Sherman's battle with the bacterial infection cellulitis robbed him of five AFL matches. The infection was a setback for his career - but he also could have paid for it with his life.

"Left untreated, it can be life-threatening," the Brisbane Lions midfielder said.

Sherman first noticed the infection days after playing a match for the reserves at Maroochydore.

Bacteria had entered his body through a blister on his foot and, as the burning rash advanced up his right leg, he knew something was wrong.

Only after being treated in hospital by an infectious diseases specialist did Sherman realise how fortunate he was.

"It got as high as my knee and I spent a week in hospital," the 20-year-old said.

"They say if it had got as high as my groin I could have lost a leg."
The Tasmanian said he was not offering illness as an excuse for what was a disappointing third season in the AFL. He also ignored the pain of a fractured toe.

Both setbacks will be used as lessons to ensure next season will be his best yet.

"The illness shocked me and I had to come to grips with it pretty quickly," Sherman said.

After finishing second to Simon Black in the 2006 club best-and-fairest award, he was expected to be a high achiever last season.
Instead, he played only 14 games and was dropped twice because of poor form.

Many observers thought representing Australia in the 2006 International Rules series sapped him of energy.

"Looking back, it probably did," Sherman said.

"I missed three weeks of the pre-season - that's nine running sessions - and that was vital."

The Australian team was coached by Kevin Sheedy and it was also Michael Voss' final outing.

"You don't get to represent Australia every day," he said.
"I played with Vossy in his last game, which was pretty special."

Lions co-captain Jonathan Brown said much was expected of Sherman next season.

"We all hope 'Shermo' can improve on last year," Brown said. "He had a great first two years of his career and last year was a bit of a downer. That can happen when you're young.

"Hopefully he bounces back and gets a good pre-season under his belt."
Every Lions player has been handed a personalised training program to prepare them for next season.

Some are bulking up and others are chasing speed records.
Sherman craves endurance so he can add another element to the midfield or provide impact as a scrounging forward.

Re: Justin Sherman

can't image the amount of pain he would have been in with cellulitis in his lower leg

I had it in my entire forearm a couple of weeks ago, 4 days after burning my arm in Canada I was in the ER in London on an IV drip !

the infection didnt start for 4 or 5 days but when it hit it spread bloody fast and with a lot of pain.

had to hold my arm above my head the entire day because if it went below horizontal it would fill with blood and feel like it as about to explode

next day i was on a plane back to Australia with 10 days worth of antibiotics and penicillin

Re: Justin Sherman

Just finished reading that story. Just more reasons why I am reluctant to bash players who have performed in the past.

I'm with you. Some here know more than others, but can't really share if the player hasn't publicly spoken about it. In any case, encouragement and support works much better than expressing negativity.

Look after your feet Shermo... and the rest of it! :D
