Brisbane did not ******** him off as you put it.
Brisbane offered him a contract to stay on the rookie list for one extra year.

It is Baird that decided to put himself in the draft. The word is that he has an understanding with several clubs that they will pick him up in the National Draft thus an automatic two-year contract and on the senior list.
The rumoured clubs involved are Collingwood, the Swans and Carlton. It's a matter of which club decides to use a higher draft pick to secure him.

Next time be more respectful when you start a thread here. The Brisbane Lions forum is a hairline trigger-happy zone.

If your sources are correct, surely that's against some afl rule isnt it? Effectively poaching a player from another club? Don't know the afl rules that well, maybe someone can enlighten us. Of course knowing it and proving it are two different things!

I don't think so. I would imagine clubs say to players all the time that they will draft them if still available at pick X.

It is not really poaching if his rookie contract was due to expire. The player is entitled to seek out the best deal and the other clubs are able to offer better terms.

At the end of the day, the Lions have judged that he is only worth another 1 year rookie contract while, if Irel's statement is true, other clubs rate his value higher. Nothing sinister there.
