The official music thread (as requested by North 'I spit on your gravy' Bhoy).

If you don't know who Basia is, or never saw a gig at The Venue or Seaview Ballroom, or watched a game of VFL footy at Arden Street you're a fair bit younger than yours truly & I won't hold that against you. But....

If you think boy bands, lip synching and Australian Idol are a good thing - think again. If you can't play it live, it aint music (with a few exceptions) as far as I'm concerned.

So fire away. Post your musical memories. Early gigs, favourite gigs, youtube clips of forgotten closet classics, your own brushes with stardom, your own claim to fame and of course - drummer jokes.

If any of the Junior Roos want to crap on about Paris Hilton or Justin Timberlake's latest single, please start your own thread.

Re: The Bring Back Basia Bonkowski Action Faction

WTF?

I must be old. I thought Basia Bonkowski was an ex-SBS newsreader

This might help clear things up (history of Aussie Music TV shows). From early 80's you'll find Basia.

Warning kids. Pics of Richard Wilkins (MTV) & Alex Papps (The Factory) with some very ordinary mullets.

Tonight on Aunty!

Rage: 20 Years of Rage
Clare Morgan, Reviewer
April 7, 2007

The Hoodoo Gurus, U2 and Guns N' Roses appear in this 20th birthday celebration.

ABC Sat -April 7. Time11:50 PM

Rage disease: late-night affliction in which the bleary-eyed sufferer, after levering oneself off the couch, stares at the screen and mumbles "Ooh, I'll just stay up for this one" before sinking back into the cushions and empty beer bottles.

Rage celebrates its 20th birthday with a party in four parts, beginning tonight with a retrospective covering 1987 to 1991 with guest programmer moments, bloopers, behind-the-scenes footage and, of course, a smorgasbord of clips. Tex Perkins (pictured) delivers succinct links.

Perhaps it's a reflection of our musical tastes of the time but the first half-hour (all that was made available for previewing) features few Australian artists. We're five songs in before we hit paydirt with the Hoodoo Gurus.

But it's as much an archaeological dig as a trip down music's memory lane. Marvel at the sight of U2's The Edge with long hair. Giggle at the rock-star cliches of Guns N' Roses. And wonder what was going on with the bizarrely coiffed fellows of King Kurt.

Re: The Bring Back Basia Bonkowski Action Faction

Dunno where to start.

Good: Tool, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Faith No More, Black Sabbath, Muse, Turbonegro, The Smiths, Devin Townsend, Sepultura, A Perfect Circle, Modest Mouse, Mos Def, Springstein, Elvis Costello, Cog, Bowie, The Beatles.

Bad: Every single thing the missus has been watching this morning on those music shows. Such rubbish.

Favorite Gigs? Cog @ The Palace last year, Tool @ Myer Music bowl a few months ago. Muse were sensational at the Big Day Out. They are the stand outs.

Re: The Bring Back Basia Bonkowski Action Faction

Hate the Hoodoo Gurus. And The Angels while I'm at it.

Best Aussie band ever?

Best gig ever was The Cramps in Edinburgh 1980ish, Or the Clash at the Glasgow Apollo 1978.

The Tatts are great but I reckon not many can begruge The Oils as Aussie's #1 band (AC/DC excluded - BJ is a Brit)

Apparently even JYD is a fan as well. :)

Re: The Bring Back Basia Bonkowski Action Faction

Oh man do I approve of this thread. Great work, Lidge.

Time to inflict.

Okay, my list of fave bands would look a little something like this....

Top 5

1. Superchunk
2. Archers Of Loaf
3. Guided By Voices
4. Built To Spill
5. 3 way tie between The Pixies, Seam and Pavement

Honorable mentions....

Afghan Whigs, All, Arcwelder, The Bats, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Beulah, Big Star, Billy Bragg, Braid, Nick Cave, The Chills, The Church, The Clash, The Clean, Crooked Fingers, Decoder Ring, Died Pretty, Dinosaur Jr, Dirty Three, The Dismemberment Plan, DJ Shadow, Do Make Say Think, Nick Drake, The Eastern Dark, The Fastbacks, Felt, Firehose, For Against, Fugazi (incl. Minor Threat and Rites Of Spring), The Go-Betweens, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Hot Water Music, Husker Du/Sugar/Bob Mould solo, Iron & Wine, The Jackson Code, Japancakes, Jawbox, Jawbreaker, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Joy Division/New Order, June Of ’44, The Karl Hendricks Trio, Knapsack, Knievel, Lambchop, Leatherface, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Les Savy Fav, Love Of Diagrams, The Lucksmiths, McLusky, Midnight Oil, Minus The Bear, The Miss Alans, Mission Of Burma, MK Ultra, Modest Mouse, Mogwai, My Bloody Valentine, New Pornographers, Nothing Painted Blue, The Notwist, Old 97’s, Palace, Papa M, Pavement, The Pernice Brothers, Pinback, The Pinehurst Kids, The Pixies, Poison Idea, Pollen, Polvo, The Pooh Sticks, The Posies, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Public Enemy, Radio Birdman, Rainer Maria, The Ramones, The Reels, The Replacements, Ride, Rocket From The Crypt, Samiam, Sandpit, Satanic Surfers, Screamfeeder, Seam, Sebadoh, The Shins, Silkworm, Silver Jews, Slint, The Smiths, Smudge, The Soft Boys, Spent, Spoon, The Sports, Starflyer 59, Stars, The Stems, Stone Roses, Matthew Sweet, Swervedriver, Talking Heads, Teenage Fanclub, Television, The The, Tsunami, 20 Minute Loop, Unrest, Versus, Walt Mink, The Wedding Present, The Welcome Mat, The Who, Wire, Wolfie/The Like Young, The Wrens, Wu-Tang, XTC, Yo La Tengo.

(Yes, they were in alphabetical order. And, yes, I'm a dork. But you don't have 5000-odd cd's and not keep them in alphabetical order on an Excel spreadsheet. Saves a multitude of headaches.)

Favorite shows (off the top of my head):

Festivals....

* '92 Reading Festival - check this - Nirvana, Public Enemy, PiL, PJ Harvey, Shonen Knife, Nick Cave, Teenage Fanclub, Mudhoney, Buffalo Tom, Pavement, Leatherface, The Charlatans, The Wonderstuff, and the mighty Redd Kross. (Highlights of the 3 day festival - lead singer of L7 taking out her tampon on stage and hurling it into the crowd, the mysteriously missing Nicky Wire of Manic Street Preachers smashing up his guitar and throwing a piece of it into the crowd...it hit a bouncer and gave him 16 stitches....oh, and the acid I scored.)

* Loved the '94 Big Day Out, particularly seeing The Breeders, Teenage Fanclub, Smashing Pumpkins (m'eh), and The Ramones basically one after the other on a beautiful sunny afternoon in Melbourne.

* The one-off Summersault festival - Pavement, Jawbreaker, Rancid, Beck, Bikini Kill, and then a killer performance by The Beasties to finish the day.

Gigs....

* The Shins @ The Corner Hotel
* Birthday Party @ The Seaview Ballroom
* Hunters & Collectors/The Wreckery @ The Central Club (back when the Hunnas still had about 15 members in the band)
* Billy Bragg @ The Palais
* The Sunnyboys @ The Seaview Ballroom
* PiL @ The Palace
* Superchunk/Buffalo Tom/Fur @ Prince Of Wales
* Sugar @ Town And Country Club, London
* Any of the Weddings, Parties, Anything XMas gigs @ The Central Club
* Any gig at my all-time favourite ever Melbourne venue - The Old Greek Theatre in Richmond - particularly some great early TISM and Hard-Ons shows

Don't be alarmed. I write about music. I already have these kind of lists handy. :)

And, finally...my pick for best Australian band of all time ??

The Go-Betweens.

Particularly when you factor in GW McLennan and Robert Forster's solo work.

The Tatts debut is a killer.

I bear no ill-will towards the Hoodoos.

The Angels I do hate.

Re: The Bring Back Basia Bonkowski Action Faction

Painters and Dockers!
Lead singer was a big Roos fan.:thumbsu:

You Am I's Tim Rogers....and also Mark Wallace (Squeezebox Wally), the accordian player from the Weddoes.....both mad keen North.

Re: The Bring Back Basia Bonkowski Action Faction

Great thread, I did enjoy watching Rock around the World as well as Arena on the ABC.

Just some favourites that I remember.

Some memorable hard rock/metal gigs.
Anthrax @ The Entertainment Centre. It was a madhouse.
Living Colour @ Festival Hall. Vernon Reid shredded the place down.
ACDC @ the Tennis Centre. Being the first ever event there, it should have been named The ACDC Arena.

Some memorable Ausrock gigs.
TISM @ Collingwood Town Hall, Burwood Teacher's College, Old Greek Theatre, ..
Limespiders @ (Too drunk to remember where)
Hard Ons/Meanies @ Prince of Wales.

Kicking myself for not seeing Faith No More.

I saw Faith No More (awesome), but wish Living Colour had made it to Perth. Such an underrated band.

Re: The Bring Back Basia Bonkowski Action Faction

Most of the bands, Hoodoo's , Rose Tattoo, great bands.

First Gig: I saw Alanis Morissette, with one Taylor Hawkins ( Foo Fighters on drums) in December 96' Noted a few seats down same row, a few blokes ( with some sh1t hot women who I presume were their girlfriends now wives, were sitting, namely premiership players, A.Stevens, A.Simpson, and a bloke called Glen Archer ;-)

Saw: Van Halen in 98', Evanescence 2007. Saw Brian May blow the house of the Palais in 1998. Shihad ( who were suprisingly quite good)

Re: The Bring Back Basia Bonkowski Action Faction

Best gigs I've been to as listed in no particular order

Midnight oil at some pub around the eltham area i think ( john longmire was there that night)late 80's

George Thorogood at the town and country in Hamersmith London, sensational stage show

Queen in Melbourne, stage show was probably the best I've seen no doubt, Freddy new how to rock......

Guns n Roses,Metallica, Janes addiction, all day gig that took me a week to get over, in New Mexico USA, at some university stadium (9 hours of hard rock)

Rolling stones at the brixton acadamy, brixton ,london, only 500 to 600 people there as a warm up for a european tour, played under the name"pink umbrellas".got the word from a guy in the music business to go.

red hot chilli peppers at the same venue as the stones , awesome

Guns n Roses at the Troubadour in LA back in 86, i had a hang over for three days( you should have seen the women lining up after the concert to get back stage!!!!!???)

Madonna in Las Vegas, seriously it was bloody good......

The Melody Lords, cover band that played a few years back in Melbourne, they were cool

thats all I can remember....:D :D

If it's anything like the EYE CANDY queues on Sunset Strip LA lining to get into many nightspots...I drooled that experience in '99 also. Vegas ain't a bad place either if you know what I mean? ;)

Re: The Bring Back Basia Bonkowski Action Faction

I was 18 and not wise enough or well traveled enough to take advantage:rolleyes: :p
Also saw Motely Crue at Whisky a go go, the lines there after the gig were actually twice as long!!!!!!!!!
