And is there anybody that standed out for Sandringham - Phil Zarra etc.....
Jimmyjess I thought all three games were solid. For me Ben Hughes No:12 and Tristan Francis No:7 for the power stood out, I think Ben will be very good for us this year and could develop into a powerful forward as long as he concentrates. I didn't actually notice Delphine that much, wouldn't have said he had 30 possies but then I had been there all day so was getting a bit of a sore behind by the third game. I think across the board, the Power look very smooth and I think the final squad will come together as well if not better than last years team. The boys look fit (even though it was very hot) and also very keen, and really made Sandringham look like amateurs. (sorry sandy followers, no hard feelings) Rob Eddy looks very fit, but again more often than not he misses his mark when kicking, too many mistakes from where I stood, Lauchlan Hanson needs to learn to spoil rather than try to mark every ball, whilst he is a very good mark, he doesn't always win it and punching in some situations would clearly give him better results. I could keep going on, but I'd make too long a post. Overall I'm impressed so far and can't wait for the season to start.Jimmyjess said:Watched the Power and Dragons at Korumburra yesterday. Warm conditions and the ground was in pretty ordinary knick (but at least it was bad for both sides). A very hard and uneven surface.
From the Power perspective the players from last years premiership were solid contributors all day. Ricky Delphine collected his usual 30+ possessions. He definately runs the risk of contracting another bout of leather poisioning in 2006.
Robert Eddy was excellent and the Power will benefit from him being available for all games as he has finished his VCE.
Lachlan Hansen dominated at CHB playing on Nathan Roberts for the first half and Jake Muir during the 3rd quarter. Their combined stats against Hansen for the 3 quarters was 1 handball. Would have liked to see him given a go at CHF where they struggled.
Jamie Youle enjoyed an on-ball role at times away from the back pocket. He isn't super quick but has the "football smarts" and uses the ball very well.
A couple of the new guys who impressed were Blaser and McKenna with Connelly (Ruckman) kicking goal of the day with one of the worst kicks of the day.
Looked a very different unit to last year and don't appear to be as big, however, used the ball very well and won by over 6 goals. Rested Eddy, Hansen, Delphine and others during the last quarter.
Good to see Jeff Ryan back in the early game following time on the sidelines. Beau Vernon also played in the earlier game due to an interrupted pre-season and was carried off on a stretcher during the first quarter. Looked bad and reports during the day went from ligament to broken bone to no breaks. Whatever the outcome will probably miss a few weeks at best.
What did you think of the game Saintly Newby?
Hey TP, Hughes was very good in the forward line yesterday, I hope he becomes our key forward, he is big and strong enough, deserved a pat on the back.Talented Player said:jimmyjess see that you are a fan of Gippsland Power so what did you think of Luke Webber #21 and Ben Hughes#12 down the forward line yesterday. Calder vs Eastern. Calder won U16 & U17 game easily. Given a hiding in U18 game by Eastern.Kegs44 said:Neone else got reports from other praccy games?

Good point Saintly Newby. On one occasion he tried to mark from behind against a smaller player. The ball died a bit and he was caught out. His marking is one of his biggest assets and he is encouraged to go for his marks. I noticed later on when he was caught behind Muir he punched the ball defensively to the boundary.
The key is that when you make a mistake (such as trying to mark from behind) that you don't do it again. You can be made to look pretty silly if you keep trying to outmark from behind.
I'm looking forward, like you, to watching the Power this year. They don't have the bigger bodies such as Dore, Fraser, Neagle etc but their skill level impressed me for their first hit-out.

Jimmyjess I believe guys like Dore, Fraser and Neagle will be replace with guys like Tom Johnson, Ben Hughes, Tyson Goldsack, and Lachlan Hansen they mightn't have the big bodies like the other guys but they are strong with alot of courage. others to add to that list would be Jeff Ryan and Brent Macaffer. Your comments have been good to read.

I agree TP. When I saw Sandy run out on Sunday it was easy to see that they were the bigger bodied side yet Gippslands uncompromising attack on the ball and skill level was much superior on the day.
Ben Hughes and Tom Johnson have been playing senior country footy for years and can handle themselves more than adequately. Goldsack and Hansen are starting to fill out but are both deceptively strong in their upper body. Tyson is the only overage player at Gippsland and he should benefit from this new rule.
I think Macaffer and Ryan were both playing in the first game. I was sitting to far away during that game and don't know how they went. Jeff is coming back from injury and will provide some extra physical pressure on the opposition.
Jimmyjess said:Jimmyjess, Macaffer didn't play, he's injured, but should be there against the stingrays in the next fortnight. Considering he played a couple of games last season, I think he'll only improve this season, certainly looks very fit and has tanked up a bit too.Talented Player said:I think Macaffer and Ryan were both playing in the first game.
