A new approach
Gold Coast look beyond 2012
The goal leading into the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons was to have the best possible players in the team to have a fair dinkum shot at the flag.
Three consecutive top 4 minor round finishes (2 of them top 3) and a pre-season premiership over that period has established Gold Coast as one of the most consistent teams in the competition. Unfortunately though, the club hasn't fired when it mattered most. Since the massively depleted 2009 team, missing key players including S.Lucas, D.Cross, J.McVeigh, B.Dalziell (he was good back then), D.Hille and N.Malceski, fell agonisingly short of a grand final we have built a devastating losing streak of 7 consecutive finals. When players get injured or are rested at that time of year there hasn't been enough quality depth to step up against the best teams despite having very good quality throughout the top 20 or so players.
What has changed?
After taking over in the latter stages of 2008 I decided I wanted to make the list my own and traded heavily. I was able to get very good quality players all over the ground and continued this trading success over the past 2 years. However, this strategy has left Gold Coast with no veterans or stalwards and only a few good candidates coming through. I believe that it will be very difficult to win a premiership without a few of these players to add free or cheap quality depth. In the past I had always focused on making the Gold Coast team as strong as possible in the next season but now a look to the future is required.
How the assessment affected the 2011 squad
Deledio's contract was immediately extended. He and LeCras will be eligible for stalward status in a few years time which will be massive for the team, especially if Brown and Malceski are fit and firing as a veterans at the same time although that may be wishful thinking. Darling's contract was also extended and Petterd, Hardingham and Tutt were retained with good contracts for the future. Green and Malceski were also retained as possible future veterans.
Players like Swan, Pavlich, Hille, Moloney and Thomas were traded for younger players as long-term prospects for stalward spots in the future and most deadwood was moved on.
How the draft provided valuable pieces to the puzzle
Finally I decided to target players in their early to mid 20s in the drafts as they'll reach stalward/veteran ages before most of the players traded in. I thought I'd be able to get a few of them with mid range picks so I traded all my early picks away for quality youngsters along with pick downgrades in the range I thought I'd need to get my targeted draftees.
The gamble paid off. I got all of my first 4 from my priority list and was delighted with the 11 players I drafted.
From my preference list... 1, 2, 3, 4, =5, =9, 10, 13, =15, =20 with Neale being a last second change of preference over my 22nd priority listed player. So essentially I ended up with 7 of my top 10 priorities and 11 of 22 overall.
Successful off-season
At the moment I feel like this has been my most successful off-season so far. Gold Coast now has a heap of players I'm hoping will give provide a couple of quality long-term players from all ages. And future trades will be made with the intention of filling vital pieces of the puzzle needed to be a powerhouse when it all comes together.
2012 season
2012 will be an interesting year. I think there's still enough quality to play finals but a top four finish will be much harder to achieve than in the past. But who knows, I have a lot of confidence in the young guns that were traded in and high hopes for most of the draftees. If Brown can come back strong Gold Coast might just challenge a few of the favourites.
