Cairns under water now,dodged the cyclone but not the rain.I lived in Cairns from 1995 to 1997 and I remember lifetime locals telling me at that point that Cairns hadn't had a direct hit from a cyclone since 1951.
The next direct hit was 1999 when a cyclone hit Cairns as a category 1.
There's something about the mountains circling it and the close proximity to the reef either deflecting them or sucking the energy out of them.
I remember when Yasi appeared in 2011 and the tv crews hanging around Cairns like a pack of ghouls. You could see and hear the disappointment when it didn't strike Cairns.
