All things Kyle here.

Named as one of three emergencies for the round 7 clash against Port Adelaide @ AAMI park, Adelaide on Friday 6 May 2011. I believe travelled with the team but Tom Murphy was the late inclusion for David Hale.

Kyle Cheney played his first senior game for the Hawks in the round 11 game against Fremantle at the M.C.G. on Sunday 5 June 2011.

This was Kyle's 15th game of senior AFL Football. The previous 14 with Melbourne FC.

Cheney replaced the injured Shane Savage. Has been rewarded after playing some good strong football for our VFL side the Box Hill Hawks.

Stats for his first game.

7 kicks
4 marks
10 handballs
2 tackles
and
1 free against.

Round 14 Hawthorn v Essendon M.C.G. Friday 24 June 2011

Cheney named as one of three emergencies for Friday nights game got the late call up when Hawk defender Thomas Murphy was ruled out with a neck injury.

Playing just his 2nd game for the Hawks and 15th game of AFL, Cheney went onto kick his first ever AFL goal! A wonderful shot running to the pocket.

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson admits Kyle Cheney has been "stiff " not to get more opportunity at senior level, but the former Melbourne defender says he is loving his first year at the Hawks regardless.....

...
"I'm really enjoying the change," Cheney said.

"I've come in and the guys have been great.

"The camaraderie around the place is awesome and it's a great place to be around."

Sounds good and positive.

Kyle Cheney played his first game against his old club in the Round 18, season 2011 clash Melbourne v Hawthorn at the M.C.G. on Sunday 24 July 2011.

Playing his 5th game for the Hawks he ended up with 6 kicks, 5 marks and 10 handballs in our 54 point win over the Dees.

Round 21 2011 Season.

Having played every game since Round 14 with Round 17 the Bye, Cheney started Round 20 v North Melbourne @ Aurora Stadium as the Substitute. Came on in the early part of the last quarter and took 2 good grabs as the Kangaroos tried to snatch a desperately needed win.

Cheney ended up with 3 kicks and 2 marks in our win.

However he has been omitted for the round 21 clash against Port Adelaide @ the MCG. on Saturday 13 August. Named as one of three emergencies.

Ended up playing 6 games in a row for the Hawks and 7 games to date with his new club. Has not been the worst player and seems unlucky to have been left out but as taller key position defenders are now available after injury (Schoenmakers who comes into the team and Lisle as an emergency); and the suprising performance of first year mature player Paul Puopolo who plays a similiar role to Cheney, Cheney might battle to win back his place in 2011.

Kyle Cheney only managed eight games for the 2011 season after crossing from Melbourne FC, but ultimately proved to be a handy addition to our defensive depth. He was still under contract to the Demons for 2011, and, with the Dees paying a portion of his salary, Cheney was a bit of a bargain buy.

Young Kyle doesn’t possess any stand-out features in his game, instead, being a reliable all-rounder. The red-headed defender is hard at the contest and strong overhead, has reasonable pace and is reliable by foot. He was described by his junior coach, Phil Partington as being “harder than a cat’s head”.

Kyle Cheney made his debut for the Hawthorn football club against Fremantle in Round 11 at the MCG. He had a run of six games in a row in the seniors between Rounds 14 and 20, but played only one more game for the season (against the Suns on the Gold Coast), and was not considered for the finals.

His best game was against Essendon in Round 14, where he managed 21 possessions, 8 marks, and kicked his only career goal.

He can play taller than his 186cm, and is often called upon to play on the opposition “third talls” with some success.

Although competition for places in the Hawks’ starting six in defence is hotting up, I personally see no reason why Kyle Cheney can’t step up to be a regular for the brown & golds in 2012.
