More info on Paul Stewart:
Paul was solely a depth player in 2015, playing just the 6 AFL games and spending most of his time in the SANFL. Some exceptional early season SANFL form saw him come in for the injured Patrick Ryder in Round 9. His AFL form was solid. He was good against Melbourne and followed that up with a 16 disposal, 1 goal game against the Dogs in Round 11. After a poor game in Round 11 he was dropped back to the SANFL, before playing 3 more games from Rounds 14-16. He generally played across the half forward line as a quasi-3rd tall, but failed to impact the scoreboard regularly enough.

I was at a PAFC function on the weekend where the players were coaching young kids in skills. Paul was part of a group of players looking after a line of kids at a handball target. After a while a couple of them said let to Paul have a shot. He speared it through from about 3m away, very impressive. Sadly not a skill that wins games. However if his kicking is as deadly accurate that is another story.

Paul's looking very fit in the 2008 pre-season. Shows great dash off half back in match day training drills and is willing to take players on. Query on his disposal by foot, gets a bit up and under some kicks and not the most reliable hitter of targets at the moment.

Very impressive debut by Paul Stewart in round 1 2008 v Geelong. Took everything he's shown in the trials - dash off half-back, willingness to take them on and break lines, putting the body on the line and doing the 1%ers - and produced it in the heat of a fiercely contested round 1 clash against the reigning premier. What also stood out - and rated a mention in the paper - was how clean his hands were. Very assured ball-handler, reminiscent of the young Michael Wilson. Couple more with hands like his and we might've pinched the result.

Finished with 18 disposals (7K, 11H), 5M, 3xI50s and 1 assist.

Stewart kicks off in style
ZAC MILBANK | March 21, 2008 01:00am

IF only all Port Adelaide's players handled the ball as cleanly as Paul Stewart.

As Geelong piled on the pressure at AAMI Stadium last night - the Cats laid 13 more tackles in the first half - it was the Power's first-gamer who showed up his more experienced team-mates with a cool head.

Just 20 years of age and with only 12 SANFL league games under his belt, Stewart displayed great poise as he chose carefully when to rebound from defence. His impressive decision-making was emphasised when he showed composure to leave his man and make an important interception in Port's charge in the third quarter.

It was a sign of things to come as he took a bounce, dodged a tackle and hit Brett Ebert on the chest during a frantic final term.

And it wasn't easy for the Woodville-West Torrens product. Geelong had been inside 50m 13 more times in the opening half than Port as the host's backline was put under the pump.

A player with any less confidence would have gone into his shell but not Stewart. He managed to withstand the heat, keeping his direct opponent - fellow debutant Ryan Gamble - under relative control while managing 18 disposals without a clanger in his first AFL outing.

While Stewart's ability to run and link up with team-mates from defence was impressive, the other up side to his game also shone through. At 191cm, the athletic backman's versatility was illustrated in him not only being able to contain mid-sized forward Gamble but pint-sized 177cm crumber Mathew Stokes.

His stay on the dangerous Stokes was only brief but it indicated the faith Port's coaching staff has in him to multi-task. Just a pity the majority of Stewart's team-mates didn't choose to join him in conjuring such a polished performance, particularly in the first half.

Stewart sweats on selection

DEFENDER Paul Stewart was among Port Adelaide’s leading possession winners in his debut game against Geelong, but he faces a nervous wait this week to see if he retains his place in the Power’s best 22.

The 20-year-old received the call-up last week to replace injured centre half-back Troy Chaplin, but with Chaplin ready and raring to go against the Swans on Sunday, Stewart is hopeful a pre-season chat with coach Mark Williams will help get him the nod.

“Earlier in the year Mark had a meeting with all the young boys and he talked to us about selection and that sort of thing,” Stewart said.

“He said that he doesn’t like dropping people after their first game, but I guess if there are people coming back from injury – there’s nothing you can do.

“Chappy [Chaplin] is a great player and he’s earned his spot, so he deserves to slip straight back in, but it depends on the match-ups and what the coaches think.

“I just might have to remind Choco about that conversation.”

etc ...

Playing for the WWT Eagles against West Adelaide in the SANFL (26/4/08) Stewart dominated from wing/HBF collecting 25 kicks, 10 marks, 10 handballs, laying 4 tackles and kicking 2.1 (one poster). Collected the 3 points for best on ground and should be in line for a recall to the Power side v Essendon.

Stewie's game was rewarded with Port's SANFL Player of the Week award.

Rnd 5 SANFL wrap-up

Paul Stewart

Tough-nut Paul Stewart picked up the SANFL Player of the Week award for Round 5 after a standout performance for the Eagles against West on Saturday.

Stewart, who played four games for the Power earlier in the year, starred on the wing picking up 35 disposals and kicking two goals.

The award is judged by the Power development coaches and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.

The club’s development manager Daniel Healy and development coach Darren Trevena take us through all the action from a busy round of SANFL for Power players:

Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week Paul Stewart (for Eagles v West at Richmond) – Paul played on a wing and had 26 kicks, 10 marks, 9 handballs, 16 handball receives, 5 bounces, 6 inside 50s and 2.1. It was a very complete performance from Stewie and it was great that he went back to the SANFL and stepped up after having a week off being 23rd man for the Power. We want to develop him into a winger and this performance showed he’s got the capabilities to do so. We were very impressed.

Re: 14 Paul Stewart

Given hartlett's injury, I'd like to see him in the side this week.

I might be mistaken, but I think the last time he played for us was against carlton at home last year where we lost, and we was carried off on a stretcher due to concussion after putting his head down for a hard contested ball.

His SANFL form this year warrants AFL selection.

I'm on record on several threads supporting his selection this week.

Notes:
After break through season in 2010 which saw Paul become an important part of Ports defence, Paul struggled to relive that form early before missing the majority of the season with a shoulder reconstruction.

He spent a lot of the pre season training with the midfield group and he would start the year playing higher up the field on a wing. Whilt he played some solid games in his six games, he failed to capture the toughness and direct play that saw him become a fan favourite in 2010. He was dropped after the Hawthorn match in Round 7 and played the one match at SANFL level. He dislocated his shoulder towards the end of the match and would miss the rest of the year after having surgery to fix it up.

2012 becomes an important year for Paul. His spot on the list will be in jeopardy if he cannot find the form that made him a regular last year. A move back to the half back line makes sense both for Pauls form and the structure of the side.

Stewart: We're Ready For Dons

Port Adelaide’s Paul Stewart has successfully emerged from a six month preseason recovering from a shoulder injury and is looking forward to being part of the Power’s first squad to face Essendon since Round 23 last year.

Stewart missed the Power’s narrow loss to the Bombers in 2012 but is part of a side better prepared to face the men from Windy Hill on Saturday afternoon.

Positive Approach Key To Stewart’s 50

Paul Stewart clocks up his long-awaited 50th AFL game this weekend against Richmond. It’s been a long time coming for the second-round draft pick, who has adapted into one of the most versatile players in the Port Adelaide side.

Stewart was recruited from Woodville-West Torrens in 2006, debuting for Port Adelaide in the opening round of 2008, but had since been plagued by injuries to his hip and shoulder.

PORT Adelaide's comeback hero Paul Stewart has paid tribute to premiership player Adam Kingsley.

Stewart - who kicked the last-minute goal against the Kangaroos last week which dramatically snapped the club's six-game losing streak - revealed he was in serious danger of being delisted before some choice words from Kingsley turned his now-flourishing career around.

New Roles, New Deal For Stewart

Stewart has impressed with his continual development at Alberton. In 2010 - when he played 20 games as a defender - he earned Port Adelaide’s Most Improved Award. Since his injury setback in 2011, he has taken significant further strides in this his sixth season at the club.

“A lot of work has gone into Paul’s development and he deserves plenty of credit for that,” Primus said.

“He’s very attentive and wants to learn and always improve himself.

“We’ve started to see some consistency as an AFL footballer from Paul and that’s what comes with playing 50 games.

“He now feels comfortable at this level and we are seeing a consistent performance from him whenever we play. That’s what we are developing as a club - getting players comfortable to play at AFL level.”

Notes:
After a poor 2011 which saw him miss most of the season with injury, Paul played 21 games in 2012 and found a niche across the half forward. Whether it was kicking the winner against North Melbourne, or his dominant display against Adelaide, Paul was able to have an impact with his possessions and went some way to recapturing his form of 2010. The next step for Paul is to get more of the ball and keep himself in the game for longer, pushing himself to make the step up to one of the clubs best players.

Paul Stewart - Port Adelaide's Mr Versatile
NO ONE can pigeonhole Paul Stewart. Not even the Port Adelaide ... well, it is Port Adelaide forward, wingman or defender?
“Everyone’s got a story,” says Stewart.
In this script, it is just a little difficult to typecast him or work out which group meetings he attends at Alberton when senior coach Ken Hinkley breaks up the squad. Even the AFL guidebook plays safe saying Stewart is “capable of contributing in either defence or attack.”
