Player Watch #40: Eddie Ford

His review at the end of the season focused on his need to take his fitness to another level if he wants to secure a half forward/wing role.

Lost close to 3kg and has improved just about every measurable running metric since he came back for pre season. Expecting that he solidifies himself as an AFL footballer this year.
I lose 3kg most mornings....

But you're right there's an excellent AFL player starting to emerge

Very much underrated when the convo talks about our youngsters.
Great to hear he’s bucking down with his fitness as he has the talent
Did he win the most improved award ??

100% agree. I think how Ford performs this season is up there with how Wardlaw does in terms of our future.

He could be as important as anyone. He has played 22 games, less than next years H&A season. Throughout that time he's showed glimpses including 10 SIs in one of his first games.

In his last four games he kicked seven goals including three goals twice. The first time against Melbourne he kicked them early and helped get us in front at half time. The second time against GC he kicked them when the game was on the line.

He's one of those players who can kick multiple goals in a short time and change the course of a game. Larkey, Zurhaar, Boomer, Ben Brown and W80 are the only other players who really did that for us with any consistency over the last decade.

That he was able to kick those mini bags in quick time and has then spent the off season really working on his endurance is bloody unreal. If Duursma and BGeorge can show those traits we could have one of the most potent medium forward set ups in the comp cos we also have the likes of Curtis, Sheeze, Sleevo and even Taylor (if he gets it together) all capable of playing as impacting medium forwards who can mark and kick goals from crumbs. That's eight potentially match winning forwards and so far four have shown they can really take the game on in the forward half (CZ, 40, PC and Sheeze off a small showing.) Two are untested and the other two have shown enough to say they can play that position well with the right attitude.

Then rest TT up forward as well. LOL.

Despite that depth Ford has got the ability to really play well there. Has similar strength, speed and athleticism that other "power forwards" have, as well as good kicking and handball skills and he can mark under pressure, in packs or out on his own. He's only had one run of games, from about round 10 last season and as I said above it finished with him kicking seven goals in four games, including multiple goals in a short time at crucial points in games. His third quarter goals were instrumental in our victory over the GC at the end of the year.

RF_08's report on his off season is one of the best things I've heard about where we are at right now.

Its great news he's prepared to work hard to get better at this stage, when we have so many medium forward options.
