Aphrodite I have been thinking about doing a preview of the Oz Open in the 'other sports' thread but I will do it here instead. Thanks Aphrodite for linking the web site as I was able to download the draw and look at the first couple of rounds.

Ok one more sleep to go until the first grand slam of the year gets underway. The player name this 'The Friendly Slam' due to the friendliness of the volunteers and how the tournament is run.

On the men's side the big four Djorkovic, Federer, Nadal and Murray are obviously the ones to win the title but with Nadal and Murray coming back from injuries this leaves Djorkovic and Federer as the favourites. BTW they are on opposite sides of the draw which means they could potentially meet in the final. Outside chance last year's winner Wawrinka and Japanese Kei Nishokori. Special mention goes to another Serb Viktor Troicki who won yesterday's tournament in Sydney having to play qualifiers to get into the main draw. Troicki has just come back from serving a 12 month suspension from not providing a urine sample when required during a tournament early last year. I love watching Spanish player Fernando Verdasco (or hot sauce) he has a big serve, great ground strokes and easy on the eye for the ladies.

As for the Aussie men Hewitt should get to the third round where he could meet big serving Pole Jerzy Janowicz. I don't expect Krygios to go very far due to his injury woes he has been having but hopefully he will prove me wrong. Kokkinakis has a winnable match playing Ernst Gulbis who is more famous for his interviews than his tennis, he runs hot and cold. As for Tomic who knows. Duckworth plays a guy he played a couple of years ago which he lost in five sets. That match went for over four and half hours. Oh and I forgot big serving Sam Groth and Matsoevic.

As for the women Serena would have to be the favourite she is No. 1 in the world and even though she didn't play particularly well in Perth that means zip. Other contenders Sharapova and Czech Kvitova. Dark horses Simona Halep and even Azarenka who has been out of action for a while due to injury. Ana Ivanovic has been playing pretty well over the summer.

On the Aussie front Stosur should be able to make the third round. Casey Dellacqua and Jarmila Gajdosova have tough draws.

I love an upset and looking at what the players wear but I wish the men would wear their shorts a little bit shorter and not baggy style.

I am in a knock competition called Suicide Pool which runs every day for the women and men.

Plenty of Australians in action on day 1 with most a very reasonable chance of progressing through to the second round.

Very easy to dislike and he may be a w***er but he is an Australian so he has my support on the court.

Huge talent who hasn't lived up to that just yet for a number of reasons. Everything coming from his mouth at the moment is positive and indicates that maybe, just maybe, he's beginning to understand what is required of him.

He often doesn't help himself but hopefully he starts to turn that around. Has the talent to be a very very good player.

Tomic's problem is his father.

Del Potro pulled out due to his ongoing wrist problems. He missed all of last year due to having surgery and he played last week in Sydney but he must of aggravated it and has decided to rest it.

The only Australian missing is Ash Barty an upcoming young player. For reasons unknown to me she has just gone missing from tennis which is a shame because she had great promise.

Like I mentioned above Kokkinakis has a great chance to progress even though he is playing a seed. This is the one of the first round matches I am keen to watch.

On the fashion side I think there will be a lot of green and orange out there with most of the clothing companies coming up with the same colours.

Nothing on this entire planet will make me like Tomic even the slightest.

The guy is an outright douche.

Tomic is a funny one, he is a very lay back guy but he does play good tennis in Australia but he plays crap everywhere else. The other thing I have noticed with Tomic this summer is his accent. Usually his speaks with a good aussie accent but I have noticed that his accent has been accentuated with his native tongue, very strange.

Put aside his personality he does have a good game, he is tall, has a good serve and groundies. He is working on his mobility around the court. Is he a future top 10 player, I don't know but past players seem to think so.

She released a statement to say she's fallen out of love with the sport and has burned out. She retired.

TGR how can she retire and fall out of love with the sport she is only young.

Congrats to Jarmilla Gjadsova she has won her first match at the aussie open in 10 attempts. Unfortunately she now has to play the 3rd seed Simona Halep, but anything is possible.

I have now switched to Matsoevic's match and I see it is a tight match. It is one set all with his opponent with the break.

She's probably been hitting for hours since she was 4 or 5 though. It happens, remember Tracy Austin?. The tennis guy on SEN read out a statement from her just before the Aus season started.

I find Matsoevic a douche even when he is winning. I also don't like players revving up the crowd. I am not a fan of Hewitt's either although I do like him commentating.

I have turned over to Ivanovic's match and after winning the first set really comfortably she lost the second and is down a break in the final set. Ana looking lovely in a dark purple skirt and a light mauve top. She really is in a lot of trouble out there atm.

Where I thought players would be wearing green it looks like the ladies are wearing purple's and pinks.

OMG the No. 5 seed Ana Ivanovic has been dumped out of the AO in the first round. I am stunned. Her opponent had to play qualifiers to get into the main draw and is a specialist doubles player more than a singles player.

I was hoping that Ana would go deep into the second week. She had a great tournament in Brisbane and looked to be hitting the ball well, wonder what went wrong with her game besides her serve. Unfortunately I was watching Matsoevic.
