Hot Hawks scorch past Eagles to complete three-peat

Alastair Clarkson's Hawthorn team has irrefutably stamped itself as one of the greatest sides in VFL/AFL history, clinching its third consecutive premiership with a commanding 46-point win over West Coast in the hottest Grand final on record.

After the Eagles kicked the opening goal of Saturday's game at the MCG, the Hawks took a stranglehold on the contest with nine straight goals to set up a 16.11 (107) to 8.13 (61) triumph on a windy day when the temperature rose to 31.3 degrees to surpass the previous Grand Final record of 30.7 in 1987.

The victory made Clarkson's 2013-15 Hawks just the fifth club to win three flags in a row, joining Carlton (1906-08), Collingwood (1927-30), Melbourne (1939-41 and 1955-57) and the Brisbane Lions (2001-03).

Clarkson is also now the Hawks' most successful coach, with Saturday's win his fourth premiership triumph (2008, 2013-15) and taking him past the three flags won by John Kennedy snr (1971, 1976, 1978) and Allan Jeans (1983, 1986, 1989).

Just three weeks after West Coast humbled them in the qualifying final, the Hawks turned the tables, rediscovering their trademark mix of 'unsociable' pressure and clinical ball movement that had deserted them at Domain Stadium three weeks ago.

The Hawks set their win up with a commanding first half when they regularly got over the back of Adam Simpson's vaunted 'web' defence to find open targets inside their forward 50.

They also forced West Coast into uncharacteristic mistakes with their relentless defensive intensity, while they were as accurate in front of goal as the Eagles were wasteful.

Cyril Rioli was the star, providing much of the spark on Hawthorn' s forward line, particularly in the first half. He finished two goals, four goal assists and 12 marks and was an extremely popular vote for the Norm Smith Medal.

Jack Gunston made a seamless return from the ankle injury that had sidelined him since the qualifying final, kicking a game high four goals, while Sam Mitchell controlled the game in the midfield, winning an equal game-high 34 possessions that were delivered with his usual precision. The former Hawks skipper also had six clearances, four tackles and two goal assists.

Hard-running wingman Isaac Smith also hurt the Eagles on the scoreboard with three goals, while two-time Norm Smith medallist Luke Hodge (30 possessions) enjoyed another good Grand Final day, the highlight a banana off one step from the boundary line early in the second quarter.

James Frawley continued his strong form since his disappointing performance against the Eagles three weeks ago, keeping Coleman medallist Josh Kennedy goalless, while Brian Lake (11 marks) regularly short-circuited attacks with intercept marks and stopped Josh Hill from goaling early in the last quarter with a desperate smother.

After trailing by 44 points at the 14-minute mark of the second term, West Coast briefly threatened to get back into the game when they kicked the next three goals.

The first two came through Josh Hill and, after the half-time siren, Elliot Yeo.

Yeo's composed set shot from 40m cut the Hawks' lead to 31 points at the main break, and when Jack Darling kicked the opening goal of the second half West Coast was back within 24 points and you sensed, more importantly, back in the game.

But it quickly went south for the Eagles, best illustrated by Darling's dropped mark and subsequent fumble when a simple set shot was in the offing.

The Hawks whipped the ball out of their defensive 50 and Ryan Schoenmakers kicked truly at the other end, snuffing out any sense they might wilt in the unseasonable spring heat. Hawthorn kicked five of the next six goals to go into three-quarter time with an unassailable 50-point lead.

The final quarter was little more than a victory march for the Hawks, and the Eagles restored some respectability to the scoreline with the final three goals of the game.

The Eagles were attempting to become the first team to win the Grand Final after missing the previous year's finals since Geelong in 2007, and just the fourth team to do so since the competition went national in 1987 – the others being Essendon in 1993 and Adelaide in 1997.

Their endeavour could not be faulted but their ball use was well below their normal standards, especially in front of goal. For example, after holding their own in general play in the first quarter, they went into the break down by 19 points, thanks to their 1.5 return and the Hawks' 5.0.

Andrew Gaff (34 possessions) ran tirelessly in the midfield, Luke Shuey (26 possessions) tried hard but let himself down at times with his disposals and Sam Butler stood up in defence under the Hawks' constant barrages.

Only Jock McHale's legendary Collingwood 'machine' teams now stand above Clarkson's Hawks with their League-record four consecutive premierships from 1927-30.

And just four coaches have won more flags than Clarkson – McHale (eight), Norm Smith (six), Jack Worrall and Frank 'Checker' Hughes (both five).

Seventeen Hawks played in all three of the 2013-15 flags – Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell, Jarryd Roughead, Cyril Rioli, Jordan Lewis, Grant Birchall, Shaun Burgoyne, Josh Gibson, Brian Lake, Ben Stratton, Isaac Smith, Luke Breust, Paul Puopolo, David Hale, Liam Shiels, Jack Gunston and Bradley Hill.

Hodge, Mitchell, Roughead, Rioli, Lewis and Birchall have played in all four flags in the Clarkson era, while Burgoyne is also now a four-time premiership player, having played in Port's 2004 Grand Final win.

Bolton's release brings in fresh face to Clarkson's team

Alastair Clarkson has joined greatness. He is now a 4 time premiership coach, and 3 in a row for the Hawks last Saturday has the side among the greatest in the history of the game. But Clarkson has had his fair share of difficulties along the way.

It has been known now for a long time that the Hawks breed some of the best coaches in the AFL, recently Adam Simpson, Luke Beveridge and now Brendon Bolton have studied under the mastermind, and now all 3 are coaching their respective AFL sides with Bolton taking the reigns of the Blues in 2016.
However, without question, Clarkson has been able to mend the losses of the former assistant coaches on each occasion with the Hawks still seemingly going on to win the top prize in the competition.
So how does he do it? They obviously have a well structured setup down at the Hawks and only bring in the best of the best, but now with Bolton out of the ranks does that mean the Hawks will be on the slide in 2016?

inegbc.jpg

Clarkson and the Hawks have already moved quickly to shape there coaching list in 2016 with the admission of Bolton, someone needed to step up and Clarkson has picked up a young man who has no experience in the AFL industry what so ever, talk about a fresh face.
Hayden Sumner has joined the Hawks as the midfield coach for 2016 and the young man from central Victoria says he is ready to get started,

"It's a huge challenge coming into the AFL system without too much experience, sure I've coached my own football sides before, but this is the big league and performance and results are what drive this business, so if we aren't winning matches, then we aren't delivering results.
I'm looking forward to working (even though some of them are at the end of their careers) with guys like Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell and David Hale through the midfield. I 100% believe we can go for a fourth straight flag in 2016 with the list still staying together".

Clarkson, after having a difficult year with his coaching group in 2015 with the death of Brett Ratten's son late in August is looking forward to seeing what the new setup will provide.
"Yeah, everyone is always learning something. Doesn't matter who is in the seat next to you in the box, you'll always be learning something. The scary thing is we've been such a good side for so long, that teams are always improving to beat us, so it's our job to keep improving ourselves.
Sumner brings a lot of new fresh ideas into the club and i'll work with him closely so one day he can be ready if it's something he wants to
peruse into being a senior coach".

Hawks delist youngsters

Hawthorn has started it's list turn around for 2016, with de-listing 4 youngsters. James Sicily, Kaiden Brand, Teia Miles have all been delisted from the club after not playing any matches for the Hawks, while fan favorite Jonathan Simpkin has been told he would not be offered another contract as well.

The Hawks will head into the National draft with pick 11,30,47,51,64,98,115

The Free Agency and Trade period is commencing on Monday with some big names in the AFL destined for rival clubs.

Trade period prepares for big names to shift
Monday's trade period is shaping up to be one of the biggest in the history of the game. Each year, big names of the competition are able to move clubs freely and this years crop of players looking to move is no different.
Some big names have been shipped around over the recent years with James Frawley being one for the Hawks last year while Eddie Betts to Adelaide have proved a win for the Crows in recent years as well.

Hawthorn are set to be very quiet contenders this year in the trade period, with most of the squad in great shape and going around again. However Clarkson has hinted that the Hawks would look to pick up some players who are struggling at other clubs for opportunity within the midfield so when the likes of Hogde, Mitchell and Lewis are finished (probably in the next 1-2 years) then they have players ready made to come in and take the spots.

A few players have come out and nominated clubs, with Mark Blicavs leaving the Cattery and nominating the Lions are his preferred club.
The utility had a break out season with the Cats in 2015, however with further opportunity at the Lions, Blicavs wanted to make the move for his further career after the Cats looked to talls, Mitch Clark and Rhys Stanley in recent years.

Some big talk coming out of the Demons camp this season as well with skipper Nathan Jones could be out the door seeking other options as the Demons look set to trade out and re-build from scratch. Media reports have also mentioned Demons forward Chris Dawes could be looking for his third club as the big man has had a tough time being in Melbourne colors since his cross in 2011. Dawes has battled injury and the emergence of gun forward Jesse Hogan, Chris Dawes finds himself on the outer with Paul Roos and Simon Goodwin.

Hawks loose premiership backman to Suns

Hawthorn's premiership backmen Grant Birchall has told the club he wants out after being convinced by the Suns to make the move to the coast. Birchall who has won 3 flags for the Hawks in his career, now leaves as a 28 year old for the Suns and will line up with other premiership running defender, Nick Malceski in Suns colors.

The Hawks receive pick 26 in the national draft as the Hawks had this to say.
"We thank Grant for the wonderful years he's had here. He will always be a premiership player for the Hawks and we wish him all the best for the future at the Suns. He will provide plenty of experience for the Suns and will be damaging across half back with Malceski.
We're happy with the pick 26 in return, as we look to bring in a few younger players into the squad, so we'll look to offload pick 26 to another club if we see fit.

Huge scoop for Hawthorn as they pick up All-Australian ruckman from West Coast

Hawthorn has once again surprised us all with a major play in the NAB AFL Trade period. The Trade period hit Wednesday with not much movement on the trade front, however the Hawks have again come up with a massive play. In recent years, Hawthorn have picked up Brian Lake and James Frawley in the trade and free agency period making both those players into premiership winners.

Well now they have an All-Australian ruckman at their disposal, and he's arguably one of the most exciting players in the competition.
Hawthorn has traded pick 11 in the national draft for Eagles ruckman Nic Naitanui.

okzjw9.jpg

Hawk fans, get used to seeing this man in the brown and gold in 2016

"It's a massive get for us. Nic came to us and was looking for a trade back to Victoria after spending many a years with the Eagles. The loss in the Grand Final really hurt him and our recruiting staff was able to convince Nic that he'll be able to have more success with our club and be the number 1 ruckman with Hale coming to the end of a amazing career, while the Eagles have both Lycett and Sinclair waiting in the wings.
Naitanui has been a multiple All-Australian player and he is too good of a player to not be a premiership winner, so having him on board will hopefully boster our chances of going for a 4-peat flag next season.

We gave up pick 11 for Nic which we though was spot on, it took a little while to do (the trade) however the Eagles were comfortable with the end result.

Hawks trade out veteran ruckman

After the arrival of Nic Naitanui to Waverly, David Hale's future was up in the air with the veteran premiership ruckman weighing up his decision wether to continue his career or not. Hale decided he wanted to go on with his career, however the Hawks couldn't promise much game opportunity with the arrival of the All-Australian ruck.

After talks with the list management at the Hawks, David Hale asked to be traded where he was able to continue his football career. Hale nominated Collingwood as his nominated club. Hale would be a experienced get for the Pies who are looking for some experience with Witts and Grundy as the only rucks in the side.

Hawks premiership ruckman has nominated Collingwood as his preferred home

Hawthorn and Collingwood began talks for the premiership ruckman, in which went like this. Collingwood gained, Hale and pick 47 while the Hawks received running backman Paul Seedsman from the Pies in a move in which would see Seedsman replace Grant Birchall in the side after Birchall was traded to the Suns earlier in the week.

Seedsman who won the ANZAC day medal this season against the Bombers in round 4, would relish in a new side after falling out of favor with Nathan Buckley at the Magpies after performing very well in the first 6 matches of the season. Seedsman will be able to work with some of the best in Gibson, Stratton and Frawley at the Hawks in 2016.

Hawks pick up a couple of Crows

Hawthorn has finalized it's trade period in the last hour on Friday picking up 2 players from the Adelaide Crows to finish off what has been a super trade period for the club.
Hawthorn has picked up out of favor Crows in Mitch Grigg and Cameron Ellis-Yolmen in exchange for Brian Lake, Brendan Whitecross, pick 30 and pick 51 in the national draft.

Lake who has been a premiership winner for the Hawks in the last 3 seasons has found his third AFL club after the Hawks decided to not give Lake another contract.
"It's very similar to the Hale deal, we weren't prepared to give Lake another contract at this stage of his career and he had the option to either retire or trade and continue on at another club. We're glad both players (Lake and Hale) have decided to play on".

311l7ys.jpg

Hawks defender Brian Lake has continued his AFL career, now as a Crow

Brendan Whitecross who has been ravished by injury over the last few seasons has also found his way to the Crows along with Pick 30 & 51.
"Brendan came to us and was a really hard decision for him to make. He was very appreciative what the club has done for him over the last few seasons with all the rehab he has done through the club regarding his ACL injuries, however he thought it was time to move on and seek opportunity elsewhere.

We're respectful of Brendan's wishes and wish both he and Lake the best of luck at the Crows in 2016.

The Hawks were able to get 2 young Crows into the squad at the expensive of Lake and Whitecross from crossing over.
Mitch Grigg who played some very sold football in 2015 for the Crows in the first half of the season however with the tragic passing of Crows coach Phil Walsh, found himself on the outer in the second half of the year. Grigg has been on the Crows list for some time now and has only played a handful of matches. With the Hawks coming out at the start of the trade period and signaling it's attention to bring in ready made midfielders for the likely departure of some veteran midfielders over the next couple of years, Grigg and Ellis-Yolmen took the opportunity.

Ellis-Yolmen was another who had a break out half a season with the Crows in 2015, but fell out of favor with Crows interim coach Scott Camporeale. The hard bodied midfielder would be a welcome inclusion into the Hawks senior side, with his height and long kicking a feature of his game.

National Draft

Hawthorn Hawks

Pick 26 - Corey Adamson
After the Hawks traded out their first round selection in this year's draft to secure Nic Naitanui from the Eagles, Hawthorn looked to it's second round selection in pick 26 to select their first player in the national draft.
Corey Adamson is a mature aged recruit from Victoria who is also a big bodied midfielder standing at 188cm and a big 93kg

Hawks recruiter Chris Pelchen said this regarding Adamson.
"We identified that we needed mature aged midfielders over the coming years with guys like Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis coming to the end of their careers. We picked up Grigg and Ellis-Yolmen from the Crows during the trade period but we saw Adamson as a very suitable recruit for the club. His body is ready for the riggers of AFL, so we'll see him play some matches in 2016 I would have thought.

Pick 64 - Josh Glenn
Josh Glenn is another "mature recruit" out of the draft being 22 years of age which the Hawks took at pick 64. Glenn is a small defender from the Geelong Falcons after a very solid VFL season in 2015. At 180cm and a slight 76kgs, Glenn's defensive work and explosive speed is something the Hawks fans will get to witness in 2016.

Chris Pelchen was on standby to give us an insight on Josh Glenn.
"He is another mature age bloke we identified as a need in the coming years. He might not play games straight away as some of our defenders are still a few years away from finishing with the likes of Stratton, Gibson and now Paul Seedsman in the side to complement the defensive unit. Glenn comes to us as a dashing defender who's defensive work one on one was a highlight during his VFL season. Another player we see who is ready for AFL football, however with the spots the way they are at the moment, probably won't see him till 2017, yet anything can happen.

Pick 98 - Nicholas Grogan
Grogan is a young small defender from the Peel thunder in WA. Grogan is a 19 year old 181cm, 89kg defender who like Josh Glenn has been found by his defensive work during the TAC cup. Grogan is a left footer (something the Hawks have been famous on over the years) who may just like Glenn, have to wait for senior opportunity but the Hawks see plenty of potential in the defender to be at the club for 10+ years.

Pre-Season Draft

Pick 11 - Sam Grey (Port Adelaide)
Hawthorn have given Port Adelaide forward Sam Grey another chance at AFL level after picking up the 23 year old with pick 11 in the pre season draft.
Gray at 176cm and 76kg will be a depth player with the Hawks bosting one of the best forward setups in the game with the likes of Roughead, Gunston, Bruest, Puopolo and Rioli all ahead of him.
