Am I the only one that is annoyed about how a bloke who was injured for the good part of three years, who we stick with in that time

Finally gets his body right and finds some sort of form just to knock Back a contract for somewhere else

Do we know the full details though? ... one report mentioned that the contract offered was not all that great. Until we know what Port offered him, and what they told him regarding his future with us, add to that the fact that he was definitely offered as trade bait ... well its pretty stiff for us to judge him IMO. He is clearly list-fill only ATM, and way down the pecking order for his position. He also doesnt have the speed & versatility to play elsewhere, so the writing has to be on the wall regarding his future at Port.

He tried, we tried .... All the best to him.

I'm a little with you, but I understand what Newton must be thinking and I think he is making the right call.

For mine he should've been number 1 on our list of players to trade and get some value from, so I'm mostly disappointed we couldn't get a trade done for him and in particular that we didn't manage to secure Gorringe.

Overall he's an average footballer who was never going to become AFL quality here so we lose little other than depth. The issue is just that were replacing him with pick 110

Let's be honest Newts was probably a goner from our list at about the time this happened:

I also wouldn't be surprised if he was also slightly disappointed at being told he would be used as trade bait because I think it was 100% clear we went into trade period with trading him as an option.

pick 110, after passes & rookie elevations will end up being a pick in the 50s or 60s in terms of live picks

Nope, not the only one. I hope he ends up back with us on the rookie list.

Inside mid with nice footskills. OK size for an inside mid but limited athletically. Unlucky to not have played more at AFL level. A bit vanilla but could be a decent mid. Worth a gamble with a mid-late pick.

Clearance specialist, very good in traffic, big left hoof.

But slowish and shortish.

He had his admirers with us that's for sure.

Potential to quicken up, we are in need of a clearance specialist, assitance for Selwood. I wouldnt mind Wines, he is an absoulute gun, wasn't amazing at a junior level (went to school with him, lived in Echuca), however his determination and willingness to keep pushing at every contest, he is a beast. I think you guys found a future skipper, brownlow medalist, and possibly 300 gamer. Hasn't missed a game yet if im correct? Anyone down with a Motlop and Walker for Ollie

Dees in pole position to sign former Power midfielder Newton

MELBOURNE has emerged as the front-runner to secure the services of delisted Port Adelaide midfielder Ben Newton.

The Demons have been keen to build their midfield stocks since the arrival of Paul Roos and successfully introduced young midfielders Dom Tyson, Aidan Riley and Viv Michie to the squad last season through the exchange period.

Newton is regarded as a talented player who has been starved of opportunities to consolidate a place in a star-studded line-up at Port Adelaide.

Would rather the Dees than one of the top clubs like Geelong (as has been mooted). He will clearly get a huge crack at Melbourne and if you are going to give anyone a bargain, it may as well be a basement dweller like them.
