Toast Black Caviar

Black Caviar made it 12 wins from 12 starts today winning the TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick.

I'm no horse racing pundit but she is an amazing horse to watch. Looked in trouble at the top of the straight today just found another gear and mowed down all comers again. 5 lengths down near the top of the straight, wins by 3 lengths. Outrageous.

Black Caviar makes it 12

I was lucky enough to be at Royal Randwick yesterday and even luckier to be in the Commitee Room.

I would have gone to see Black Caviar run even without the free tickets and free booze but the vantage point from where we were was amazing so it was all a bonus.

From the moment she emerged applause followed her every move around the mounting yard and up and down the track. It was something I've never experienced at the races before, people just standing and staring, watching and waiting to see if the great mare could deliver. There was a bit of a stunned silence at the top of the straight as Haylist took off and surged 4 lengths clear but then Luke Nolen gave her a niggle and BANG in the blink of an eye she took off and literally made it look like the other horses were running up and down on the spot. As she swept past the grand stands people stood and cheered as though they all had a share in this freak of a horse and my wife said to me "this is unbelievable, I've got goose bumps" which probably stopped me from getting a bit more emotional than I already was.

Let's not forget that Haylist is a great horse and beat the rest of the field by 5 lengths but was still made to look ordinary.

When I went back indoors people seemed genuinely stunned and a little overawed but everyone was talking about the horse and the next time they hoped to see her run which is great for the racing industry.

And then the waitresses handed out Black Caviar for everyone...

People generally love to see a champion especially in sports that don't mess with your emotions like club based competitions.

So You Think was another thoroughbred heading for this sort of adulation before being sold overseas.

And horses don't have human foibles that eventually see tall poppy syndrome kicking in. ;)

Heard the build up on the radio and saw the last 200 metres or so. Absolute legend of a horse from the sounds of it.

EDIT: I'll add that the highest odds they showed were 1.10 and the lowest 1.00 for a win!

16 from 16 on Saturday but pulled up sore so wont run in Perth in a fortnight as planned.

Shame for the racing industry in WA as this magnificent beast pulls a crowd wherever she goes so they will miss out on a windfall.

She wont run again this year and I'm not sure we'll see her before the Autumn?

It's a pity to see her spelled early as she has become an equine celebrity.

Interesting article in the weekend media with former jockey Gary Willetts saying Manikato's record stacks up even better and that maybe Caviar's owners are taking the easy option in sticking to sprint races as the opposition drops off.

Black Caviar not yet in Manikato's class, says former top jockey

On another note, So You Think's international owners are considering the champ's best distance following an unplaced finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic (Kentucky) on the weekend.

Think's miss cuts to mile

Makybe Diva's better

Comparing a horse whose best results were over 3200 metres to a 1200 metre specialist is very naive of you young fella.

Both Champion mares.

3 Melbourne cups in a row >>>>>>>>> anything black caviar has done.

Some people have very short memories

You do realise you are comparing apples and oranges don't you?

As for short memories I watched Think Big go back to back in the early 70's (74/75) so I've seen a few horses run around.

You are comparing a 3200m horse to 1000m horse? May as well compare a marathon runner to a sprinter.

I'm not sure the young bloke understands horse racing.

The Cox Plate is the wfa championship of Australia and the I'd rather own a horse that won that than a mare with 3 Melbourne Cups for the prestige and the future earnings.

yeah but that's only because mares are worth about a 1/4 of a stud due to the sheer weight of progeny they can produce.

I think in terms of emotional investment I agree with PB. Makybe Diva had that air of a champion who struggled but eventually won through heart and determination. Black Caviar wins simply because she is a complete and utter freak of nature. I know I am amazed by BC but I damn near cried when Makybe got up for her third.

Bit like Rocky Balboa Vs Ivan Drago

Correct but also for racing purists the Cox Plate is THE race you want to win. I'm not denigrating MD achievements or saying Black Caviar is better, I'm saying that you can't compare the two. It's like saying a 1500 metre swimming world champion is a better swimmer than a 100 metre swimming world champion.

Give those who only nknow the names of 2 racehorse a break. I on the other hand know the names of 4 racehorse and completely agree with your point. Cathy Freeman really let us down in the pole-vault at the Sydney Olympics.

Thanks mate. I won't tell anyone about that Neil Balme mix up that Ford deleted yesterday...

Saw her (BC) for the first time live and in the flesh on the weekend. Absolutely spine tingling when you see her cruising along, Nolen sitting up and the rest of the jockeys going hell for leather 3 lengths back.

Shame about Atlantic Jewel, would have been a similar scenario in the Oaks.

I rate the Cox Plate win in 2005 over the 3 Melbourne Cups. Genuine weight for age race. I'm a Super Impose fan and the 1992 field in the Cox Plate is probably the best race field ever assembled in this country but it doesn't make Super the greatest race horse ever.

Manikato was an absolute freak as well.

I've seen her twice now, once at Randwick and on Cox Plate day this year and it's unbelievable when she comes past the grandstand and everyone stands up in a Mexican wave style movement. Everyone applauding and cheering, it is literally spine tingling.

People applauding her races in TAB's and pubs around the country is an amazing thing too.

Coincidentally, a mate who goes to the Cup every year said the only thing similar he has experienced was Makybe Diva coming down the straight for her 2nd and 3rd Cups.

She is just an absolutely beautiful horse. After watching her Australian Story it's pretty hard to not become emotionally invested in her and her races.

I really think that she needs to go to Europe to prove herself as an out and out champion racehorse. There's sure as hell no competition that even gets close here. It's pretty much to the point that no one wants to race against her now.
