I think we have had a great trade period. 9/10. Missed Shiel but in hindsight that is a good thing, given the price tag. Got some mature bodies in MCGovern, Fasolo, Newman and some emerging elite talent in Setterfield and kept pick one and next years first. Happy to go to draft as is.

Bloody Silvangi, he just can't do anything right can he. The scum don't deserve Shiel, they were greedy right from the get go. We had a chance to get our man today. All it took was SOS to put up pick 1 and the deal would have been done and those arrogant bomber fans would be weeping as we'd pull another 99 prelim on them. We had the chance to get the best deal done for GWS, for us and even for Dylan. If we could get Shiel, I'm confident we'll be in the premiership window in 2 years time. The number 1 pick is extremely overrated, look at Wietering he has turned out to be a dud, this Walsh guy could end up being the same. Now we have allowed them to further strengthen their list and ultimately shoot for their 17th flag next year.

Some on here have said it was a "moral win" getting 2 first rounders out of Essendon, however you don't get anything for coming close. Even forcing GWS to keep him would have been better than him going to Essendon. Dodo and his gang have treated Dylan, GWS and the AFL with such disrespect over the last week or so thinking they could pay crumbs to get Shiel, yet all Silvangi could offer up was next years 1st round pick!!?? Pathetic. What a waste of 3 hours this has been

Why are they trying to tell us kelly is worth 3 picks around 15, 20, 22. He is 24 and had one okay season behind some superstar midfielders, no way WC doesn't get a player of his talents with at least one of those picks.

Imagine if Merrett and Shiel get injured early next year and the bombers finish bottom 4, Pick 9 + 4 for Shiel + 30.

He costs nothing next year, they have crippled their ability to trade anyone into the club for the next few years.

Couldn't ask for a much better result tbh

My worry is that we haven't got the support Crippa needs in the middle....Shiel would have been worth it at the expense of this year's #1 pick.

1. Shiel didn't want to come to Carlton. He agreed to a new contract with Essendon, and chose less money to be there.We never had a chance to get him, even for pick 1

2. Dylan Shiel is not going to win us a premiership, and he isn't going to win Essendon one either. He's a good standard midfielder, but he isn't the messiah.

3. In 2 years time... we'll still have the vast majority of our young players still outside their prime. SPS, Fisher, and co will be 22. Dow, O'Brien, TDK will be 21. Even Curnow, McKay, Weitering will only just be 23. The only real players in their primes would be Cripps and Docherty, still. 28 year-old Dylan Shiel isn't likely to make that a premiership team.

4. This trade was always going to happen right at the end of trade period. They needed some spectacle, and this had been the big bidding war. In the end, it was a pretty simple trade that made a lot of sense, and was no doubt worked out early in the week and held over. I'm sorry if you wasted 3 hours, but it was always going to be that way.

Showed tenacity and by doing so an appropriate value was extracted by GWS.

By not folding on pick 1 2018 for Shiel we have some sort of an idea on what will expect for any possible trading of that pick.

IMO There is still more to play out and if we do trade 1 it will be for something huge.

SOS confirmed 2019 #1 round pick was on the table for Shiel but GWS had to pay overs for 2018 #1 which they didn’t want to do.
