I SAT through a private screening of The Footy Show's interview with Brendan Fevola today and left thinking maybe, just maybe, the man could overhaul his crazy life. A couple of hours later, I learned Fev had been asked to leave Crown casino earlier in the afternoon, a mere 48 hours after doing that interview.
All of a sudden, what was potentially a heartwarming story of possible rehabilitation became another episode of Fev's amazing propensity for bad decisions.

Quote: Correction: The original version of this story may have given the impression Alsatair Lynch was disappointed with the Brisbane Lions over their handling of Brendan Fevola's termination payment. On further examination of the interview, we have found this not to be the case. The error was made in the sub-editing process. We apologise to all parties concerned.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou says he would like to see the flamboyant forward at the elite level again.

"Yes I would," Demetriou said. "Our view is pretty simple. Everyone knows that we like giving individuals second chances. I think Brendan Fevola is doing his very best to make progress and the fact that he kicked a bundle of goals on the weekend is another step in the right direction."

"I know he's doing things on radio and various other bits and pieces and he's making an effort and that's all you can ask of him. Hopefully, someone's out there noticing it and they may give him a chance."

Am I correct in saying that if someone wants him at the end of the year, they will have to trade with us? Something to do with him still technically being on our list...?

Alas, even if true i would be no happier, as i cannot see anyone picking him up. I guess you never know though

Am I the only one who had a sense of foreboding when this thread was bumped. Like someone who has been the victim of repeated electrical shocks. All the bad memories came flooding back. Everything he touched turned to s**t. His name has now become synomous with something bad happening.

Hehe, you're not on your Pat Malone there Grim.

When Ceebee wrote "one year was enough" I thought "Sheesh, it wasn't seriously only a year was it?". It felt like at least 2 or 3 years.

Tetris: Fev's still technically on our list so we're in a position to trade him on, but I think by doing that we'd limit the likelihood of him actually being picked up, so I don't see us getting anything for him.

Still gets the blood pumping. You'd have to laugh at the situation if Kane and Lachie fell by the wayside a Callum turns out to be a jet. So there could still be twist in this story yet.

Since Fev is technically still on the list, does anything stop us from playing him?

Integrity, first and foremost.

On the trade issue, I am pretty sure anything another AFL club pays him next year is removed from our salary cap figure, so if someone wants him, we would be wise to let them have him for nothing in return.

If Fev did get picked up by another club next year does the Lions payout get subsidised/reimbursed by an equivilent amount ?

Did not see your post TBD, thanks for the mind reading answer.

Aren't we done paying him out this year? Or did we do a deal to have it split over two years? Have lost track.

The cash has been officially paid out this year but the salary cap hit is spread over two years.

Confession time - 12 months ago I was still drinking the kool-aid that was the Brisbane Lions No. 5. He did not deliver anywhere close to non-negotiables in 2010, but hey, he was in good company in terms of names on our list that had gone missing that year (for any number of reasons) and had given me at least, a few glimpses of absolute magic. He had also given me glimpses of absolute misery.

That divide between good and bad, unfortunately, added to what was already a pattern of divisiveness that Fevola, willingly or not, brought to the Brisbane Lions football club. That divisiveness extended through the views of supporters, board members, sponsors and from some reports, the playing group itself. We are a more united club for having expelled that divisiveness earlier this year and for that I am very grateful.

Fevola's 2011 saw him being arrested, detained and charged in the wee hours of New Years Day 2011; his attendance at a mental health facility; reported use of panacea type anti-alcohol drugs; weight issues; gambling issues; reports of previous suicide attempts; with most if not all being played out publicly in the media. After the Lions agreed to terms with Fevola's management, they too then parted ways with allegations and counter-allegations on show, like so much dirty laundry.

As for Fevola's departure, the reports were that the decision to wield the axe was made at a board level. It was also consistently reported that Fevola's (confidential settlement) payout was physically made this year, but that the amount paid would be spread across both this and next year's salary cap. Reports differed on the amount - some suggesting less than $1 million, others as high as $1.6 million. If he is picked up elsewhere, it is likely that those payments will be deducted. The Lions were also not spared criticism for their action to part ways, but to follow a common trend, views were divided when it came to Fevola's treatment by the club.

To his credit, Fevola managed to keep his head down for the most part while at Casey, although his 2011 did involve a pokies bust at the Berwick Inn, ejection from a poker room at Crown Casino and a mad Monday incident at the Glenferrie Hotel. His average of over 4 goals a game though will no doubt have some pondering the costs vs benefits of "Fev" all over again. I expect opinion will be divided on the subject. The dual Coleman medallist turns 31 in January 2012.
