Coaching sprays - the obsession

The best coaches rarely spray in individual in public and almost never talk poorly of an individual in public.

But physical sports such as footy require a mindset and effort that sometimes only come when players get adrenaline pumping and fired up.

Team standards/rules are also a vital part of any team sports and have to be enforced some how. You can't drop a player at 1/4 time these days so I get the theory behind singling out someone, but it's better privately.

I really don't understand peoples obsession with players getting sprays by coaches, do people get hardons when they see an employer reprimand an employee? It seems every time a player cops one its televised, has an article written about it or is mentioned in an article. DO we forget that this is a real game and these players are copping real sprays, the fact its publicised would be quite embarrassing for the poor players, should really be kept closed doors imo. Imagine being a small child and getting to see your dad play AFL footy and suddenly he cops a massive yelling at from a coach on national TV, it would dishearten the poor kid.
It's loved because viewers feel the coach is representing them and venting the same frustration and anger they have.

Following and supporting a team in professional sport is a fantasy. We are looking for a story, characters, twists and turns, and above all to be entertained. Therefore, we want our teams to represent how we see our idealised narrative play out. We want to see exaggerated characters, actions and outcomes. Massive tragedies, inspiring triumphs. Nothing complicated. It's fun, and it doesn't matter. It's why professional sport is the ultimate Reality TV - a group of celebrities we don't actually know personally, participating in meaningless, trivial games. At least it the outcome isn't fixed (we hope).

Look at the language we use:
'That loss was a disaster' - no it wasn't, you lost a game of football.
'They wanted it more' - So, nothing to do with skill, team planning, strategy, specific tactics or matchups?
'That will get their minds back on the jobs and inspire them' - had the players just been having a quiet chat about Masterchef before?

The Spray (copyright) is just football's version of those scenes in movies where the captain turns to his troops and says 'We're outnumbered 20 to 1. We have no ammo left. But I Believe We Are Fighting For Something Great, and That Right Will Prevail' etc. It's hokey, rubbish, doesn't work in real life, but by god, it's entertaining. Actually, that's probably more the Inspirational 3/4 time address when down by 5 goals than The Spray, but you can fill in your own......
