...When the core of the talent assembled by these clubs in the 2010 and 2011 draft hit their peak.

Buckley has copped much criticism for his decision to rebuild post 2012.

Trading out senior players Dawes, Wellingham, Shaw, Lumumba, Beams and letting Thomas go as a free agent to gain first round picks is looking like a masterstroke.

There are still first round draft picks in the sheds yet to be unleashed.

Top picks don't equal automatic success as we well know. Player development is far more important.

Collingwood's player development is second to none and only Geelong can be argued to have better player development.

Scary to think of the ceiling this exciting young squad has...

Lol this time last season they lost to the Gold Coast and Jeremy Cameron kicked 7 against them the year before giving them another scare. Both will be better, and clearly so, and Collingwood will be in the queue like every other team to cop their medicine from these two soon to be powerhouses.

You say Collingwood have top draft picks still to unleash, but in the next sentence discount it immediately by saying top picks don't guarantee success.

Collingwood have beaten the bottom 7 teams on the ladder this season, and today GWS. Maybe just maybe wait til they play Freo at Subiaco in 2 weeks before making predictions like these.

Are you suggesting that Collingwood can't develop talent?

Nope, but nor am I saying Gold Coast and GWS cannot either. With so many picks in the drafts these teams were always gonna strike gold many times over. Collingwood have Jesse White and Travis Cloke, GWS have Cam McCarthy and Jeremy Cameron, a lot of teams could lose their former number one draft pick and be on their knees, but heck GWS even have Jon Patton to come back too. When you have so many picks you can wear the duds, but teams like Collingwood, if one of their picks like Scharenberg turns out to be a bust player development won't help much.

Heck lose Tom Boyd and still have a future forward line of McCarthy, Patton and Cameron. Scary much?

That's two already

OP has been edited to hopefully clear up confusion.

Just highlighting how silly making categorical calls on these things can be (Melbourne should be right in the midst of their "dominant period" right now if the thread I linked is anything to go by), how perception can end up grossly mismatching reality, and even how lists and talent can change considerably over time, too.

Stupid thread. By the time their young talent starts peaking, Cloak, Pendlebury, Swan, Varcoe, Toovey, Goldsack among others will have to retire.

If we're comparing pure young talent the Bulldogs are a mile ahead of the Pies anyway. T.Boyd, Bontempelli, Libba, Wallis, Macrae, Stringer, Dalhaus etc. Their list is way younger than the Pies and they also won't be crippled by retirements in the future like the Pies. When the Dogs thumped GWS this year their list was actually younger than GWS on the day(and has been all year).

Swan is the only one who might retire in the next year or 2, im sure the doggies still have some older players performing who might retire soon.

Well said mate, finally an intelligent and measured response to a rather 'out there' OP .

Not endorsing the thread but Varcoe, Toovey and Goldsack are hardly irreplaceable, and Pendles has a fair bit of footy left in him. Need to find a key forward or two, but we're set up well for the next few years, who knows what will happen though.
