Crows get their own Reserves team

A WCE reserves team in the WAFL. Not one where half our players are at Earth Perth, playing under their coaches, structures and gameplan.

The problem is what happens when injuries strike? In a situation like this year we'd be fielding about 4 blokes in the team. Even with a good injury run you'll still be looking at maximum about 14-16 blokes in the team. Where do the top players come from?

I suppose it's the same situation with Swans, Giants, Lions, Suns (NEAFL), Geelong and Collingwood (VFL) face but i've never looked into their situation.

Plenty of alternatives/ solutions many of which could have little or no impact on the existing clubs.

obviously you can't take players from same comp, but if you've got only got 7 or 8 blokes to choose from, then you're just topping up with under 18's or guys from the third tier leagues... once that happens is it becoming a bit of a wasted exercise?

we pushed for it, and the WAFL didn't want it. the east perth agreement is what we got. we cant force the WAFL into anything, i'm happy with the current alignment.

See the following article...

We should be pushing for our own reserves team in the WAFL, fully controlled and run by the WCEFC. It would make our development systems a lot better. Year after year the WCE keep falling behind the opposition. Not good enough Cransberg, Nisbett and co!

Nothing more that the club could have done- the WAFL clubs would not allow a reserves team. The Crows were fortunate that the SA clubs voted for them to field their own reserves team.

Surely the challenges the SAFL had with the crows coming in would be very similar to the WAFL challenges? Why such a different outcome? Anyone able to shed any light on it?

The SANFL owning Adelaide FC would have a lot to do with it.

The Reserves team is going to cost Adelaide 400,00 a year in direct club payments for 15 years (+ CPI) on top of what the SANFL already rips from the club.
They won't be able to use existing sponsors and won't be allowed to attract sponsors that compete against existing sponsors.
Clubs will be able to opt in and out of supplying top up players. (minimum of 2 players per club selected at the beginning of the year between the ages of 18-22)
Can play finals. (AFL listing players must have played 50% or more of their games at SANFL level or three of the last five games)

The SANFL was asking for the PAFC to essentially drop their recruitment zone, colts program ect was to much of an ask.

Some of the negatives that Masto might be interested in.

Will not rest players and take up elective surgery options
SANFL doctor to provide 2nd opinion on surgeries before end of season
