Add Syuri vs Giulia from today’s Stardom ppv to the list of MOTY contenders. Absolute war!

Listen to him!!!!!

I finally watched this match today, it's awesome. I couldn't possibly have a 2022 MOTY list/thread without mentioning this match, it's as good as any women's match I've seen.

I haven't seen that Desperado/Kasai match, I might have to go track it down.

Do you know when their voting period ended? (ie. was it before or after Jay's passing?)

It's crazy to me that Aussie Open had two of the best matches of the year vs FTR, and with Ospreay vs Death Triangle, and neither of them are top 10. I think along with the dog collar match and Syuri vs Giulia (which I've watched literally 5 times in the last 3 weeks) that's my top 4 of the year. The United Empire/Death Triangle match barely cracked their hundred. Just stupid.

I am not sure, but presume it was before

well there's 208 voters, so maybe not everyone watches Aussie Open...

That's the thing, isn't it?

The ratings probably aren't important - I found myself seeking out the matches from smaller promotions that not many people watch that still had high votes. Despy and Kasai is a good example of that. I don't imagine many people saw it, so the fact that enough people who did see it voted for it suggests its worth seeking out.

Voices of Wrestling doing their Best matches of 2023 countdown (tomorrow is the top 10). 2023 was a great year match wise, and they released 11-25 today including Charlotte vs Rhea, KO & Sami vs Usos, Gunther vs Drew vs Sheamus. FTR vs Bullet Club Gold, the Queens Quest vs Oedo Tai cage match from Stardom, Moxley vs Orange.

and Roman vs Sami (also Roman vs Cody) barely in the top 50!

It's a weird list I think.

One one hand, it's the only list you find that has broad enough votership to see matches from Australia on it. But on the other hand, there clearly aren't enough voters on the list watching Australia (or Stardom, or RevPro) for the overall list rankings to mean anything.

While it's cool to see a lot of different matches recognised, in some ways the presence of matches from places like Australia highlights the shortcomings of the list, cos if more voters had seen them we know they'd be higher. And how does the list have credibility if the voters haven't even seen what their fellow voters are voting for?

seems weird that the Sead match was on more ballots than arguably Stardom's best match of the year (although the Stardom match ranked higher), but that's the way it goes.

it comes down to personal preference, not here's 100 matches so rank them from 1-100.

I dunno, I feel like if you're going to be someone who wants to submit credible votes for an end of year poll, watching 2-3 matches a week that are receiving some buzz isn't a massive ask. You tend to hear about the great matches, and while they don't all become available - especially not freely available - immediately, I don't know that I'd feel ok about submitting a "best matches in the world" list if I wasn't watching the 3 or 4 matches a week that were getting the most buzz.

I kept notes for all of 2023 to write an Australian MOTY article, and I started writing it. I thought as someone who attended 20 shows last year, I could write something pretty ok.

But the more I wrote, the more it was Melbourne-focused, and particularly focused on things I'd seen live in Melbourne and in Sydney - so what was the point?

The only credibility it would've had was as "the best matches that nobby happened to attend live in 2023." It wouldn't have been a fair or credible reflection on anything - not even my own eyes, given how susceptible I am to mood when it comes to watching wrestling, and given that I watched some stuff from Perth and Adelaide that was just as good as what I saw in Melbourne, but watching it live just adds a whole level to it.
